Hi everyone, I just joined this forum :) I have to wait until I have 5 posts so I can post picture links  that a first. Anyway, say if I want a decent display that have good enough resolution for me to type and watch HDTV, what do I look for? I'm thinking about a range no bigger than 42", have at least 720p and 1080i capability, and my computer can support up to 1920 x 1080. I know that's not exactly 1080p so that's why I'm concerned. Price...how about under a grand?
You won't find 1080p for under a grand for many many years my friend. Also, if you are using a PC be sure that you get a TV with 1:1 pixel mapping....this prevents part of the image being overscanned and you actually see the whole display on the screen instead of part of it being chopped off. About a 42" is the biggest you'll get under a grand. 1080i is just as good at that size anyways because you can't really tell a difference until at least 50". Hope this helps some.
For PC use, 1920 x 1080 rez will give you more desktop area, which is usually a good thing. You'll need a better video card to support gaming at that rez, of course.
Not sure what you mean by "my computer can support up to 1920 x 1080. I know that's not exactly 1080p so that's why I'm concerned." 1920 x 1080 = 1080p.
As for the price, there are already decent (but maybe not great) 42" 1080p LCD panels for not much more than your target, so IMO the first response is misleading at best.

you can get a 37" 1080p LCD monitor for about $1k (westinghouse), or a 42" 1080p for about $1200.
