Hi,

If you own this receiver and can pass along a little advice, I'd appreciate it. I have one that I use to OTA receiving only. It works great, but I can't manually tune the channel. When I scan, depending on where my antenna is located, I can receive all the local channels. But, I want to be able to punch in, for example, 28.1 and have it go directly there. When I press the number buttons on my remote control, a 3 digit box comes up. If I press in 281 enter. Nothing happens. Do I need the original remote? Any help would be appreciated. Searches of the archives haven't found anything. Thanks!

There is a - key on the original remote to direct enter channels like 28-1. You either need the original one or need a programmable remote such as a Harmony you can set up the - key on.

The 160 like other HD tuners will have something on the remote control to insert a "-" or "." after the first two numbers and then allow you to enter the substation number. I have a 360, and there is indeed on the remote a button labeled "-". In your example this button would be pushed after pressing 2 and 8. If you are watching the screen, after pressing that button, the "cursor" will jump to the right, and you can then press the substation number (1 in your case) and enter.

If you don't have the original remote, there is an easy work around. Press 28 and enter. Then press the channel up button once.

What are you using for a remote? If you have a learning remote that has the codes available, you might be able to assign the "-" button to one of the other remote buttons.

Hi,

.... When I scan, depending on where my antenna is located, I can receive all the local channels......

When you say "scan" I'm assuming that you are using the "scan digital" in the menu everytime you move your antenna. Doing so wipes out the previous list of discovered digital channels and populates with current found channels. In messing around with a second antenna feed via an A/B switch box, all I needed to do was enter the physical channel to discover a new particular channel or two. Then it would stay in the list even if the signal was not there.

e.g. For me 13.1 is physical channel 38. So I would enter 38-1. Once the station was ID'd, the box would add it to my existing channel list.

If you do not have a remote with the "-", then enter 38 and the TS160 will attempt analog before it will try digital (this will work as long you don't have analog reception for that channel). What I do not know is if the TS160 will ignore analog if you never scanned for it. But since there are a few stations I want to receive not yet at full digital power, I have a few anologs in my list.

If I totally off base w/my response to your post, please ignore me. :) For me adding a new channel w/o scanning everytime was not intuitive.

Thanks for all your help. I may need to track down the original remote control. I don't have a "learning" remote, or the original remote for the box since I bought it off eBay. I used the pre-programed codes in the remote control for my stereo receiver.Sorry I haven't responded, but the day after I posted this thread, it was gone. I logged back in today, and saw it. Weird. I guess it was up for review since I'm a new member.

I'm going to try the remote-enter trick and see if that works. I've typed in a munch of different combinations of numbers into that 3 star box that comes up after you touch one of the number keys, but I dont' know if I've just typed in a whole number. We'll see. I've been looking at one of those harmony remotes. Maybe now is the time...

MClever:

No, your thoughts were not off base. This is the most counterintuitive box when it comes to adding channels. It's good to know once I get the remote functioning properly, I'll be able to add channels that don't come up on the digital scan. I've gotten all the channels at one time or another by moving the antenna. I'm limited in my set up since I live in an apartment.

Everyone:

I'll let you know what happens. I think I can get a remote off ebay for cheap.

Thanks!!!!!!

Actually I have had the TS160 for about 3-4 years with D*. I think I paid like $700 for it when if first came out (ouch). It is a damn good HDTV tuner and extremely well-made.

If you add zeros in front of the desired channel, it will automatically insert a dash in the proper space. For example, 28-1 would be entered as 0281. If you dont have the dash button, this will work, or you can always use the guide or do as suggested above and go to 28 and do chan. +.
