View Full Version : Good "computer speakers" search...shielded necessary? Powered Satellites basically..

Hello! I'm searching for a 2.1 computer speaker "system". 2 speakers (L and R) and one sub. I am not sure that they need to be shielded, as they will be very close to monitors (LCD's), but i have a feeling that they ought to be, lest they ruin the expensive LCD's!! Essentially, the speakers should be self powered (active) speakers, designed to work easily with a computer's audio output: say one output to one speaker, where it will then have a built-in crossover to split between the other satellite and the sub; or more traditionally, the signal goes from the PC to the sub, then from the sub to the satellites.

i'm looking for something better than the Logitech's, the Cambridge Audio's, etc. More in line with the M-Audio's, etc. I have no experience with the M-Audios, but they seem to be a "serious music company".

i'm not inclined to buy the Swans, the Logitechs, or the Cambridge audios, but something a bit better. No offense to any of those fine companies. As a long time lover of sound, I'm just looking for something different. Once again, no offense please to any of those companies, i'm just not personally looking for those. They are very good for applications where appropriate.

As my space works well with 2.1, i'd like to stick to that. i hope the L and R speakers will not be too big (very subjective) as they will be on my desk behind the large LCD monitors, and i'm hoping that someone will now whether magnetic shielding is desirable - i'd think so - better safe than sorry considering the high cost of the monitors that will be on the desk, but someone may know a great deal more about magnetic shielding needs of LCD's here and i would welcome that.

any advice, please? thank you very much in advance.

btw, here's a link to the M-Audios that are possible candidates:

PS: the price point i'm looking for is somewhere less than, say $800, hopefully somewhere around $500 or less, but i'm flexible. i have a feeling that very good "smaller powered satellites" and one sub can be had for the range of $300 to $800. is that so?

What are you going to do with the speakers on the computer? For $800?

You only need shielded speakers for a CRT monitor or TV. The magnets have no effect on LCDs.

Your first post pretty much all of the favorites around here, I don't see what else you can glean from us other than personal opinion. Several of the models can usually be auditioned locally.

I have the M-Audio LX4 and it's a really great sounding system. If you are willing to spend a bit more, I would suggest the Blue Sky Media Desk 2.1 system. It's probably the best 2.1 professional monitoring system under $500. I don't believe the satellites are shielded but like tokerblue stated LCD are not affected by magnetic fields.

Hello Ron:

Thank you for the mention. Just a quick correction, the SATs in MediaDesk (and all of our systems) are fully video shielded. :D

Cheers!
