View Full Version : Departed - limited release?
rstewar 02-19-07, 01:42 AM So, I'm pretty new to the whole HD-DVD world and I've bought my discs almost exclusively online. I went out this weekend because I really wanted to watch The Departed on my HD-DVD player. Didn't catch it in the theater (I have a 2 year old).
I went to 2 Best Buys, Target, and Frys ... and no one had a copy. The woman at Fry's even looked in the database and said only the San Jose store had even received a copy.
Am I just SOL going into retail stores or was this disc not a big release? I mean, it was the only release this week for HD-DVD....
Amazon had even slated this as not shipping from them until next week, which is weird given it shipped this week?
I live in Seattle, not in the sticks, so I figured I'd find it. To be fair, Best Buy had a really good selection of discs, just not the one I wanted.
Is it just the Departed or have others experienced this as well?
Cheers,
Randy Stewart
oh_riginal 02-19-07, 03:57 AM I live in Seattle too. I seen a bunch of copies at Fry's down in Renton, but that was on release day, so they may be out by now. As for the Best Buys... they were selling out the same day of release. I know cause I had to hit up more than one. I would have just bought my copy at Fry's, but I was taking advantage of that online pricematch with Bestbuy.com. You can't beat $22.99!
Ill sell you my copy. I hated it.

Do you even like movies? :)
Schlotkins 02-19-07, 08:08 AM I notice Amazon is out of the HD-DVD, but has the Blu-ray in stock. I'm not sure if this means less HD-DVDs were made or if they are selling better. I thought Warner expected to sell more HD-DVDs this year, so perhaps this title is just about sold out... ?
Mark Petersen 02-19-07, 01:33 PM I also went to BB and Fry's in San Diego looking for the Departed in HD-DVD. Both stores had loads of The Departed on BR, but no HD-DVD. I asked the clerk at Fry's to check their computer and he said that they only received 1 copy! So much for this studio being format neutral.
Ill sell you my copy. I hated it.
try watching it again
I ordered mine from Amazon.com, no problem there.
got the HD DVD for the THD.

I think it just means that Amazon didn't order enough of them. Manufacturers gauge production levels based on the dealer's pre-book orders as well as some other forecasting methods. Blame the buyers at the dealer!

herdfan 02-19-07, 02:45 PM Local BB only had it in BR. So I bought the BR version. I tend to buy HD-DVD over BR if both are available.
cdub998 02-19-07, 02:45 PM I ran into the same thing yesterday. Nobody has a copy unless I want to hit BB like 45 min away from me. No way since the price went back to 34.99. I got mine from Amazon and its not shipping till next week. Guess I'll get that and my HD DVD copy of DVE around the same time. (too bad I ordered DVE in December!!!)
herdfan 02-19-07, 02:46 PM try watching it again, while learning to spell your favorite QB's first name
Ouch!
Chris Rein 02-19-07, 04:10 PM Ill sell you my copy. I hated it.
Wow. Really? I hope you really mean you hated that it was a combo. ;)
That's cool though. I respect your opinion on it. I absolutely loved it. Now, I didn't like it was a combo, but the movie... :) :) :) :)
rstewar 02-19-07, 04:19 PM Thanks for the comments... It looks like Fry's wasn't the only place that didn't have them.
Just for the record, they didn't have Blu-ray either. Ugh. I just put my order in at Amazon and they are saying 5-10 days for delivery.
Cheers,
Randy Stewart

Ouch sorry to hear about everyones troubles, I am glad I got my Pre Order in when I did.
What we are probably seeing is a "limited" release of HD DVDs and BluRays to see if the demand is there at all. This way there is not a gluttony of HD DVDs or BluRays on the shelves, but instead just enough to meet supply. This may be a new marketing ploy as this isnt the 1st time an HD DVD title has gone on low supply early into the game. I guess if you really want the move the best thing to do is pre-order it while you can to make sure you cna get your copy.
originalprime 02-20-07, 04:23 AM Did anyone else notice that Warner is still slipping in those "Coming in 2006" inserts, showing (amongst others) Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire?
You think they'd of fixed that by now, especially with a high profile release like The Departed... And no, it isn't limited. It's just hard to find. ;)
Damn near every AVS member went out to buy it!

Thanks for pointing that out.

Nope.Hated the movie.
I hate movies that set you up and then the hole dang movie comes crashing down on ya at the end.

You just don't like unconventional storytelling.
I love it when a director/writer doesn't play by the rules.
Children of Men had a similar scene about a third/halfway through the movie.
In some cases death should be unexpected. It doesn't need an excessive buildup of people screaming, yelling, and pointing their guns at each other before they actually pull the trigger.
SamwisetheBrave 02-20-07, 12:26 PM As of ten minutes ago, Amazon had one copy left. New copies are scheduled to be available on the 26th!
rstewar 02-20-07, 12:34 PM Very popular movie, indeed. And thank you for ruining the ending.

If you're referring to my post, I thought I was being very vague as I didn't layout any specific details at all.
It IS a crime movie, and it IS Scorsese directing. Such things are to be expected no?

coulda done without talking about CoM!!!
Ironhorse75 02-20-07, 05:13 PM Heh, don't worry. You haven't been spoiled.
Got a copy today at Best Buy in Hyannis. Paid full pop for it but it was third store I tried and it was their last copy so I had to go for it.
wnorris 02-20-07, 09:30 PM I had an entirely different experience. My local Best Buy had 20-30 copies in stock for HD-DVD on Friday. They had about the same for BD. Seeing reports of stores only receiving one copy, and then mine having as many as it did, I wonder if not having enough copies is a shortcoming of the store managers, and not the studio.
