View Full Version : Back to the future on HDNET! does this mean it will hit hd dvd soon?
So today I noticed hd net is playing the back to the future movies in HD, and noticed these were universal titles.
so does this mean the series will be hitting hd dvd soon?
They were on Universal-HD also, but since they are Spielberg titles, I would not hold my breath till when they are out on HD-DVD.

Same exact question asked in this thread for the same reason:

A quick search using advance search, title search only with "future" as the search word brought this thread up.

These are Speilberg films?

No.

Speilberg is the executive producer for all three films. You can probably take it to the bank that any film produced by Spielbergs Amblin Entertainment (i.e. Land Before Time, ET, Batteries Not Included, Empire of the Sun, Color Purple, etc.) probably won't hit HD DVD until 2008 at the earliest.
Sisko197 02-19-07, 06:50 PM Star Wars was in HD a few months ago, but you don't see anyone expecting Star Wars on BD. ;) Same for War of the Worlds.
This is my favorite All-Time...it's one of few DVD's I kept and not selling the Trilogy until I have the HD DVD in my hands!
rlsmith 02-19-07, 08:55 PM All 6 Star Wars, LOTR, Jaws, BTTF, Close Encounters, Titanic, Spider Man, and many many highly desired movies have appeared on the HD channels but will likely be unavailable on disk for years.
This is not to mention many less popular but still significant films. I saw Eric Rohmer's Pauline at the Beach the other day on SHO-HD. Looks terrific.
HDNet Movies is a rich source of high quality films presented in OAR and generally looking pretty decent.
It is of course a puzzle as to why the studios think that it makes sense to give something away (pretty much) instead of selling it for $30.

Not too much of a film freak are we now! :p

What connection do you see between a movie appearing on an HD channel and it's release on HD DVD? How are you imagining this could happen?
lunat1c 07-09-07, 08:49 PM Sorry to bring up this older thread but the first movie was on HBOHD today and number 2 and 3 will be on the days following. This is odd since I have been watching HBO for 20 years and not once have I seen the BTTF series ever aired. Could this mean something? BTW it looked decent, better than DVD but I feel in VC-1 it will look much better.. the sound on HBO was rather disappointing, not 5.1.
bunkaroo 07-09-07, 09:01 PM I thought it looked better on HDnet than HBO, but that's likely bandwidth related with my provider.
J Brinkley 07-09-07, 09:18 PM What connection do you see between a movie appearing on an HD channel and it's release on HD DVD? How are you imagining this could happen?
Well, there are some cases, I'd say (though BTTF is not one). There have been some instances where catalogue titles have reappeared on the radar with obviously newly-prepped HD transfers and broadcast before reaching any other media, and in such a freshly minted state that its obvious that a new home video release was at least a possibility. Road Warrior showed up last year on HDNet in such shockingly good condition that it was obvious there were larger plans and motives for creating the new transfer than distribution to niche HD channels. Blade Runner also comes to mind. That's certainly not a reliable way to forecast HD-DVD or BR releases of those titles, but it does provide a glimmer of hope, right?
Kram Sacul 07-09-07, 09:56 PM I have to agree. There's been a few titles that seem to fit that pattern. It also can go the other way: HD disc first then broadcast.

Why is that exactly? Shouldn't these be top priority?
lgans316 07-09-07, 10:01 PM I think Spielberg is one among the major investor in DTS. I think he may be waiting for a widespread penetration of the DTS-HD format in the market.
I've seen few movies on HD cable that hasn't been announced yet so i'm sure there are many movies out there that won't be out any time soon. BTW I've seen Anchorman, Badboys2, Sharks tale and the incredibles that looked great in hd but haven't been anounced.

99% of people will be happy with DTS-SD sound from the DTS-HD soundtrack using their existing Amps... so hurry and get them out as individual titles :-)

Jeff Lampert 07-10-07, 10:44 AM A rhetorical question. Why would Spielberg (or Lucas for that matter), men who are worth upwards of a billion dollars each, release their best movies for sales in the 100,000 units range? The answer is that they have absolutely no need or desire to do so. Forget 2008. There will be millions of stand-alones sitting in houses before you see their movies.

I realize that I'm responding to an ancient post here, but I wanted to point out that Warner released The Color Purple as a *launch* title on standard DVD, back in 1997.
Studios aren't going to rush all of the crown jewels out, but things like Color Purple, 1941, and maybe one or two biggies (such as Jaws or BTTF) could certainly come out sooner rather than later.
We could see Lucas show up during the calendar year as well, in the form of American Graffiti or THX-1138.

Apparently some do.
Fox is exclusive to Blu-Ray. Star Wars.
End of format war.
Hee-hee.

It did take BTTF 5 years to come out on DVD. But you never know they may want to push it on HD.
GioGambino 07-10-07, 12:29 PM If the BTTF trilogy came out on HD-DVD that would justify my entire HD-DVD player, receiver, and speaker upgrades. It is my favorite trilogy of all time.
Big Brad 07-10-07, 12:39 PM I totally agree Gio. Star Wars, LOTR, Matrix... Nothing comes close to the BTTF trilogy for me. I have seen them on HDNet and have PVR'd them. Unfortunately for me Universal Studios closed the BTTF ride, so I don't really see myself going there as often as I used to.

Let's wait 3 years and make $50million all at once (hyptoetical sum) instead of just releasing now and let the $50m trickle in over that same time frame.
Releasing it now won't remove the future market, so why not take advantage of the market as it exists today, and grow along with it?
blipszyc 07-10-07, 02:38 PM Boy, I gotta start reading the dates on these threads. BTTF is one of my all-time favorites and I was scouring the HDNet web-site looking to find out when they're going to be aired, only to find that this was originally posted in Feb. To top it off, I don't have HBO-HD, so no luck there either. I guess I'll have to see if any of the 'rent sites have it in HD.
I suppose I'm still a noob, but obviously Spielberg somehow still profits big time when his movies are played on the mentioned channels? Just wondering why does he not care and allow one source to air it like Universal-HD, but then he mysteriously won't allow another, like HD-DVD? I mean if its simply a matter of viewing volume, I'm pretty sure the gazillions of folks who watch it on cable are not going to suddenly halt watching it when it's released on disc...

Spielberg has little or nothing to do with the TV rights to his films. It has been stated that he has some control over the home video releases to a certain degree which could explain why none of his films are available in any HD format yet and many took years to reach DVD. Of course it could also be that the companies are biding their time for a clear winner to emerge and then the floodgates will open which could be good or bad depending on the attention they give to his titles. Many of the DVD releases of his pre-2000 films such as Jurassic Park and The Lost World were using the original video masters that were used on their VHS/LD releases so new transfers and possibly some cleanup/restoration are needed for HD which means money and time. Since DTS now owns Lowry Digital Imaging, and Universal is a DTS supporter this could easily be done.
rlsmith 07-10-07, 03:58 PM Thousands of titles have now appeared on cable/satellite in HD including a lot of really great stuff. No telling when we will see them on HDM.
I saw Meet Joe Black on HDNet Movies on the same day it was released on HD DVD. It has been on in HD many times over the years.
DirecTV is adding 100 HD channels this fall. I expect to see a lot more HD content.
With the format war holding down adoption, I am beginning to think that maybe we should all concentrate on electronic delivery and forget about disks altogether. :(

OH NO!! They did away with the ride? Are you talking the Universal Studios in Hollywood? That would suck if they did.
UCFKevin 07-10-07, 04:52 PM It truly will be a long, long time until Spielberg or Lucas release anything. Spielberg will be first, though. Star Wars won't be out on HD for probably another three or four years at LEAST. Until there's a clearcut winner in the format war, anyway.
Was it me or were the HD broadcasts for the BTTF flicks a little underwhelming? I couldn't see much difference between those and seeing it upconverted on my A20. There was a little, sure, but not enough to stand out and make me say, "Wow!"

It's not just you. Tomorrow part III will be on which is a little newer than the other two. Maybe it will look better.
UCFKevin 07-11-07, 03:52 PM It won't.
