View Full Version : Problems with Hollywoodland?

I can not play the HD side of Hollywood land on an XA2. There is a thread in the HD DVD hardware section where a couple of people have had the same problem with Hollywoodland. I am wondering if the problem is in the discs or the XA2. Given that the discs (at least mine) will play on an A2, it would seem that the problem is the XA2; however, since other discs play Ok on the XA2, it makes me wonder if the Hollywoodland disc is out of spec in some way that the XA2 is more sensitive to than other players.

I waiting for yet another copy. I'm perplexed too because I've had 3 copies and all behaved badly with the A2 in some regard but all different. I've had the most problems with Univeral titles on 3 different players, XA1, A1, and now A2. I'm so sure that Uni's discs are guilty of somethin', but I can't say what...?

The one I had that wouldn't load at all on the A2, loaded on the A1 and played briefly. I can't say it would play all the way through.... I'm in the space as you. :)

My copy of Hollywoodland from Amazon played fine on my XA2 until about the last 7 minutes of the movie and then it froze and I got an error code. I reloaded it and this time it played until near the end of the credits and then I got the same error code. It also happened once going from the menu to one of the supplements.

Are you getting your replacement copies from Universal or from your dealer?

I'm waiting for another copy from DVD Empire. I had and returned two copies from Circuit City. Your stuff sounds similar to mine. My first copy from DVD Empire frooze during the credits. After restarting, it frooze every try at watching featurette #3. The second Circus City copy wouldn't even load in my A2....but would in my 1.4 A1.

....try, try, try, again.... :)

I can not play the HD side of Hollywood land on an XA2.

Will it not play at all, or does it freeze up at a certain point? I haven't watched the disc all the way through yet, but I loaded it in my XA2 and it seemed to start the movie without issue.

Josh,

It would not play at all at first. After trying 6 or 7 times it got to the menu and when I selected one of the special features it stopped with error code 408bc54. I tried a couple of more times and got the movie to start, it played until the beginning of the last chapter and stopped with the same error code. After trying to restart several times, I watched the last chapter from the SD side.

I have not asked Amazon for an exchange yet. I wanted to have some idea of the source of the problem, the disc or the player. It would be helpful if Universal or Toshiba could determine the source of the problem because it is clear that it is not an isolated problem.

Just bought it today.

No issues on my A1 its playing perfect.
So I'd guess a bad batch of discs. Which seems to happen on both sides from time to time..

No troubles on my 360. Great movie, excellent PQ and a nice THD track. Glad I bought this one.

Not working on my A2 ... what's the problem? I'm getting a weird message ...

Update: Just got it to work after trying about 5 times. Let's see if I can get through the movie ...

A bit on Hidef Digest said that the 1.3 firmware fixes whatever the problem is between the A2 and Hollywoodland. I've had 1.2 for just a few days. Time to move on up, I suppose.

I cant play it either, sadly theres no new update yet for my HD E1 player.

I had problems playing my copy from Netflix on my 360. Once I finally got it to play, it froze again with 30 min left. One advantage of the combo--I could just flip it over to finish. Frustrating, however, if I had bought it I would have been more upset.

Just got around to watching this tonight on my XA2. At least tried to watch it. When I first put the disc in I kept getting "The Disc is not DVD Format". After several tries finally got it to load. Then later, while watching got the 408bc504 error code. Went through the whole process again trying to get it to load, then got the error code later in the movie. Guess I will try it on my A2 to see if that works any better. If not, will try the A1.

My A2, which just recently got 1.2 won't play it.....well, there's always 1.3 . I bought a 2nd generation player to get past this excrement, yeah. My A1 will play it but it's on my little system.

With its original firmware my Hollywoodland copy was partially working. Since I upgrade my XA2 to 1.3, it consistently refuse to play the disk on display "The Disc is not DVD Format".

Hi,

My 2nd add-on won't play Hollywoodland. First one plays no problem.
Would flushing the cache help?
How does one do that again?

Thanks

Just got this from netflix, my XA1 started freezing in chapter 5. My 360 about chapter 8. Kinda frustrating, I am guessing it's a bad disc.

I got the "The Disc is not DVD Format" error on my HD-A2 with firmware 1.3. I took the disc out, rinsed it off with some water, dried it, put it back in and it worked fine. The disc came from Netflix by the way. Guess I just got lucky?

I watched this last night on my A1 and had to flip it over to the SD side after 2 freezes were the timer kept running on but the picture didn't. It was a renter from Netflix. After some thread searching it looks like the HD side is a pain to watch all the way through, regardless of what player you have.

I had the same problems! I was playing the HD side on my Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on and near the end it kept on freezing. I thought I had a bad disc but it seems like it's on all the discs. I got so frustrated that I popped in the SD side and that wouldn't play since it's Region 1 and I live in Asia. Finally I had to FF through the parts that froze which worked, but it was very annoying.

My wife and I really like this film and desperately want to buy it on HD DVD. I am using the first gen XA1. Even if it works fine on the A1 who knows if it will play on the next player I buy. I guess we will have to pass on this title :( :(

I put the 2.2 upgrade on my A1 recently and the first disc I tested it with was Hollywoodland, The film and supplements all played A-OK. Maybe it's time to cruise Sunset Blvd. ?

The disc played without any problems on my HD-E1 (The european version of the HD-A2) The problems with this title where fixed with the 1.5 update.
