Hello, guys!

This is my first post and my first time getting a cable TV (yes, I am a dinosaur), so I apologize in advance for the noobiness.

When you subscribe Timewarner Digital Cable, and get an HD receiver, does that mean you get 720p broadcast (on channels that have them, of course) automatically or do you need to pay extra to flip the switch to HD?

I am thinking choosing the "Variety" tiers, but they have a tier called "HD" or "HDTV" tier, which started my confusion about the whole HD broadcast. Do I need this tier to get HD broadcast??
I watch mostly local channels, would like to be able to watch discovery, scifi, animal planet.

On a side note: I am planning to get HD DVR too (do they have all-in-one Receiver and DVR?). Do you guys lease or buy?

PS: I am in LA area btw

Thank you all!

If you check the Local section for the LA thread, I expect you will find most of the info you are looking for. Welcome to AVS and enjoy the HD.

You get both 1080i and 720p channels. And . . .

no extra fees to flip the switch :D

Order the package with HD included (locals too).

BTW like GoIrish said you will get a lot more help at the Local HDTV info section LA TWC. Oh well just wait for this to be moved.

Yes, you need to get the HD Tier option also to receive the HD channels. If you order the HD receiver, they'll add the HD Tier for the extra $5 per month.

TWC does have an all-in-one DVR/HD receiver that you can lease. I'm thinking of upgrading to this in the future, but have become comfortable with the regular HD receiver so far.
