freefall-fast 02-20-07, 04:37 PM Hi
Does anybody have the results for the Feb issue of Home Theater magazine HDTV Shootout results, I missed issue.
Thanx

AnthonyArena 02-20-07, 05:12 PM There are some threads on this. Do a search. I think it was Samsung, Toshiba, JVC, Mits and Sony. I think they said the Samsung had too bright a picture to watch in a dark room, color accuracy was a problem with the Mits (although they didn't review the latest model Mits), Sony's colors were oversaturated, some of JVC's colors were oversaturated, and the Toshiba did not have any 1080P imputs.
It is an interesting read. They also talk about differences in contrast ratios between the sets. The final analysis for me was that they are all great sets, and you will need to review the tvs with your eyes to see what appeals to you for the money.
Good Luck.
Ron Jones 02-20-07, 05:24 PM Actually the order of the overall ratings were:
1. Samsung HL-S6188W (DLP)
2. JVC HD-61FN97 (LCOS)
3. Toshiba 62MX196 (DLP)
4. Sony KDS-R60XBR2 (LCOS)
5. Mitsubishi WD-65731 (DLP)
6. Olevia 565H (LCOS)
Also the Mits had really poor contrast ratio numbers with a high black level. Evidently the Mits cabinet has a lot of internal light reflections. I have noted that Mits projectors generally do not fare very well in comparision against other DLP projectors.

They tested the best Sony, Samsung, and Toshiba against the worst Mitsubishi. Gee, I wonder why it placed so low? ;)
areyou4real 02-20-07, 05:55 PM It really wasn't fair to use the Mits 731 line, as it doesn't have an iris like the other sets do. Contrast ratio and black levels should of been worse. To be fair, they should have used the 732 line or higher since they have the "Dark Detailer" aka iris.
What else did they say about the Mits? How did the color accuracy compare? That should translate well across lines because I believe they share the same light engine.

I agree that they could have selected a higher-end Mits model. But the Mits that they did select has a full on to full off contrast ratio of only 777:1 and this is just about the worst I have ever seen reported for any DLP, even for early DLP RPTVs from several years ago. Although the ASNI CR was a fairly good 385:1. Adding an iris would help, but if the higher priced Mits models share this model's issues then they would still not be up to the levels of the competition. Other comments from the review of the Mits:
"..noticeable and non-defeatable edge enhancement.....thin white halos running along all of the edges...."
"This was also the noisiest TV in the Face Off, and each reviewer commented on how noisy the image looked."
"...3:2 pickup with 480i was about average, and, like most other TV's the Mitsubishi didn't pick it up with 1080i."
"The color points, while not as accurate as the Samsung's, were more accurate than those of all the other sets here."

I'd take a properly calibrated 65732 over any of those tv's because I know it's better than all of them :)
logan77 02-20-07, 08:52 PM Are you telling me that the 65732 is better than the 65831 when both are calibrated.
The 732 and 831 have identical pictures. The 831 offers more connectivity and features but none that are related to producing better PQ. I stared at both side-by-side for over an hour watching Discovery HD and I couldn't see a difference. The 731 had noticeably less contrast even at first glance.

schticker 02-21-07, 04:47 PM The Mits DLPs use a higher intensity bulb in the Diamond series (or they used to)--but brighter doesn't necessarily mean better.
Mikey_Gee 02-21-07, 06:11 PM Anyone have a link to this write-up or is it even online ?? I have a HL-S5687 and LOVE it, I would love to see what they have to say about all the sets.
Cheers

webdd -- this is last year's comparison, not the most recent one. sorry.
Whoops, you're right David. My apologies.
noob. :D
Doesn't look like the 07 is available online at the moment. Maybe we need to go to the local library and have a read...

I did search for it ... now you can see why I didn't find it ... ;)
davidwb 02-22-07, 05:46 AM it should be posted on their web site within a month, if you can wait. ron jones gave the magazine's order in his post. note that each set had certain problems, so it would be a good idea to look at them all to see what best meets your needs.
i have the samsung and love it (don't see rainbows and it's in a room with lots of light -- so i needed a lot of light output from the set).
