Let's face it, CRT's are the best, and no one knows that as well as you guys. With this new SED technology, it will essentially be CRT but thinner and smaller. Perfect for a projector! So is there something that will limit SED's to do projection, or is this entirely possible? It would be great if in the future there would be CRT quality small projectors.

Does SED transfer across to projection OK? You would have to have a three panel system or you would get SDE from your SED wouldn't you?
I'm not sure you would get the brightness required out of really small panels (which you would want for a projection system).

I'm just hoping they will bring out a 10ft wide panel :^}

Toshiba sells its part of SED business to Canon

Toshiba has revealed that it's about to sell its stake in the exciting new SED screen technology to Canon.
This means that SED Inc, which was co-founded by Canon and Toshiba, will belong solely to Canon, which will thus carry on the SED panel business independently.

According to the official press blurb on this deal, it has been done to 'facilitate the earliest possible launch of a commercial SED television business'. But it's impossible not to at least entertain the thought that Toshiba is not convinced SED can really impact the market and has decided to cut its losses and run sooner rather than later.

Quite how drastically this development will affect SED is unclear. Certainly the press information stated that SED TVs are still set for launch in Japan in the 4th quarter of this year, as has been stated before. But we have to say we found something rather chilling about the press release's final line: 'Canon will reassess its future mass-production plans for SED panels'... And let's not forget, of course, that Canon has absolutely no track record with producing TVs. Could this be the death knell for yet another promising new TV technology? Watch this space.

But then there is this....

SED TV is officially Canon SED TV as of January 29 after the purchase of Toshiba’s shares in SED Inc.

Canon has stated that they plan to begin mass production of SED TV panels in the last quarter of 2007, at a rate of approximately 1,000 panels per month.

Also, Canon is planning higher volume production of SED televisions and SED panels starting in 2010.
From Redorbit
“For now, Canon will produce a limited number of SED panels at its Hiratsuka plant in Kanagawa Prefecture and ship them to Toshiba for TV assembly. The two companies plan to start selling SED TVs under their own names later this year, with combined monthly sales targeted at 1,000 units.

Canon will then establish a mass-production system and launch integrated manufacturing operations on its own.”

This is the type of stuff that would get me excited. Something that is better than CRT - not just close to, or almost CRT.

I have contemplated the same thing. However, a judge has ruled against Canon in the Nano vs Cano lawsuit. http://news.com.com/2100-1047_3-6161591.html?part=rss&tag=2547-1_3-0-20&subj=news
