View Full Version : Stuck with RGB

OK, it looks like my Sony D50 does not like "component" inputs for whatever reason. I am using the component outputs from my upconverting DVD player (I have a NeuNeo) to the PJ but have to program the inputs as RGB to see a picture. The picture looks good but is kinda dark. When the input is programmed as RGB it does not allow for any brightness, contrast or hue adjustments. I will actually be running component into both A & B inputs. One for DVD, one for Satellite receiver. First question, is there anyway to have control over the 3 adjustments mentioned above, either through the PJ or an external device? Second question. Is there a component switcher (preferably auto sensing) that will allow me to run both components into it at the source devices and have only one component cable to the PJ?
Thanks
Dan

I'm totally confused, are you *sure* your DVD player is actually putting out a component signal and not an RGB one?
There are a multitude of component switchers in the form of AV receivers as well as standalone switchers, and there are RGB switchers out there from Sony, NEC and others.

You should have the ability to adjust brightness and contrast no matter what kind of signal you send. Hue is only available with a vid or S-vid signal.

Dan, what Vibe said is correct. Brightness and contrast are always available. Color, saturation, sharpness, etc are not available for RGB inputs. You need to adjust these in the source or a video processor.

You are using the component output, not the VGA out of the NeuNeo? I don't know the D50, but if you are using component and it thinks it is RGB, you will only get a green picture that is the grayscale info of the image. You will not get a full color image. Perhaps the D50 auto senses and is ignoring you?

As for component switches, you can spend about $15 for a good manual one or about $120 for a good remote controlled one. I don't know of an auto sensing one.

I'm pretty sure the Audio Authority 1154A claims to be auto-sensing - but I don't have one, so I can't say whether the auto-sensing works correctly or not.

Otherwise, I believe it is a decent component switch - and it does TOSLink and SPDIF as well.

My 2 cents

Yes, I am using the component. I have also used the VGA output and it works as well but again I cannot adjust the brightness or contrast with this output either. When using the component output from the DVD and having the PJ set for RJB whenever I hit the brightness or contrast control I get a little text in the bottom right corner saying "off" Definitely very strange.

I don't know the D50, but my 1271 has clamp settings in the menu. I have experienced problems with the picture (looks dark) until I play with those settings and find the one that looks best. If you find this in the menu and adjusting it fixes the darkness of the picture, make sure to save the new setting immediately or it will go back. I also thought the D50 could handle component "off the shelf" and there was no need to play with settings on the input card (12a). I am just guessing though. Don't the D50, G70, G90 accept component without modification?
