I'm trying to dub the contents of my satellite box's hard drive to my DVD recorder. If I run composite video and audio directly from the sat box to the DVD-R inputs, I can record off the Sat box hard drive with no problems. I can't see or hear the signal during recording, of course.
The satellite box is normally connected to the video 1 AV inputs of my Sony STR DE598 receiver which has both in and out RCA connectors in the video 1 connection area. The problem is, the Sony doesn't seem to provide a simultaneous output from the video 1 outputs IOW, I get no output from "video 1 out". Is this normal? How should I connect my satellite's hard drive output to my DVD recorder so that I don't have to re-patch for each dubbing session?
Thanks!
I don't know your receiver, but are you sure that the Video 1 input is set for the porper input jack? On some receivers, each input has to be set on the menu for composite, component, s-video, or whatever and only gets signal from the that input.

Usually this is done by running an A/V connection from the output of the DVD Recorder to your display (or A/V Receiver). Then you can watch what is being recorded.
As far as not having to reconnect STB/DVR etc. for dubbing to DVD Recorder, unless you want to always watch the STB/DVR through the DVD Recorder, you will need a second set of outputs from the STB/DVR that you can run straight to your display (or A/V Receiver). Typically an HDMI or Component Video output is used for that while S/Video or Composite Video is run to the recorder. Then you just have to hope you have enough audio outputs for both destinations.

Thanks for your prompt reply!
The video 1 input is active because this is my normal input from the STB/DVR. I send video onwards to the display via the "monitor" S-Video connection.
I see no capability for assigning inputs in the manual, other than component inputs, which I don't use. What's stopping me is the lack of simultaneous output ("loopthrough"?) from video 1, even though there are jacks available.
