Warner Home Video has announced 'A Scanner Darkly,' released for the first time on DVD late last year, and 'Dog Day Afternoon' starring Al Pacino will be released April 10 simultaneously on Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.

disappointed they are not combos, so I'm probably gonna skip them in favor of Universal's new releases, but I'm sure some people have been waiting for these

HELL F@#KING YA!!

They FINALLY announced it! It will have been 5 months since the dvd was released, but I think it'll be worth the wait. The word I've been sitting on since early December is that this is going to be a spectacular looking disk. I'm thinking demo level PQ all the way.

But I can't help wondering what the delay was; why this wasn't released day and date. It's not like Warner released a ton of disks in Dec-Feb. It seems like they should have been able to finish the authoring and have this title out by now, but oh well, I'm not going to complain. They can take another year to get out The Matrix ;) , now that we have a date for A Scanner Darkly, I'm happy (grinning like an idiot actually :D )

How is a scanner darkly? I've never seen it. I heard it was good. Worth a blind buy?

Them not being combos is a good thing.

It probably depends on your taste in movies, and whether to have a stigma wrt animated movies or not. I absolutely loved it, but I'm a big Philip K Dick fan as well as a huge animation fan, so it was the definition of 'my kind of movie'. It got an 83% user rating on RT, but you still might want to read some reviews before you decide to make it a blind buy.

Thanks, I love animation. I think I will like this. Lately I've been watching cowboy be-bop.

Granted, it's a rather modest sized Chapter we have here, but I expect that when this is released, it will grow exponentially, thanks in large part to where I expect it to be placed on the tier thread. :D

Ahh, that thread will finally do some good for a change. ;)

Dog Day Afternoon is a classic, anxious to see if it looks better than the semi-recent airing on INHD.

It's basically a character drive comedic slow decent into madness, set in a very familiar near future version of Los Angeles. It's all dialog, day dreams, and drug induced madness, so don't expect an action-packed, sci-fi epic, but I think it does a really good job of achieving the aims it set out of itself, and ends up being funny and tense, with an ending that is about as devastating as anything I've ever seen on film. The rotoscoping animation technique is a thing to behold. And actually I'd recommend this disk as a blind buy just as a PQ demo disk. Think of the best scenes from the tier 0 CGI disks, if they were animated in bright pulsing neon colors. I really think this is going to be an insane looking disk, for people that just want something to show off their display.

I wonder if they get some kind of not-official release schedule and then the studios make changes. They have listed Universal titles like Conan the Barbarian, Brazil, Darkman, Meet Joe Black, Smokey and the Bandit which were never announced, at least yet.

Yeah, good summary. I just watched it last night, rented it. Figured I would watch before I bought. I think I will be buying it. I really loved the story and I will really enjoy watching this one over and over again, so much to catch and different ways to interpret certain parts of it. I can't wait to see what it looks like in HD. This type of hand-drawn animation may give us an idea of what those bandai titles will look like in HD.

A Scanner Darkly was on my list of the ten best movies of 2006. Original, powerful, sick, twisted, and weird. It has the punch that is missing from so many movies today. A few words from Allan Ginsburg (from the poem, Howl):

"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by
madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at
dawn looking for an angry fix ..."

The entire poem is here:

If you haven't seen the movie yet, read Philip K. Dick's words at the end of the film. Ominous. Heavy stuff, man. Right up there with Naked Lunch, even.

One thing I do regret about the movie is not being able to see Winona Ryder in the flesh. The rotoscoping of the stand-in for her nude scene made me feel somewhat frustrated. One of the cutest actresses of our time, and they can't even render her body accurately!

Other than that, it did not make me feel vacuous like Running With Scissors, wondering what the point was. Scanner Darkly is the real thang, emotionally, cinematically, and as a work of art.
