View Full Version : Babel subtitle issues

I started watching this, and there are problems with the subs. I only got a few minutes in, and some of the subs were fine, but most of them would only flash on the screen for about a tenth of a second, making it impossible to read. Other times there wouldn't be anything at all.

Is anyone else having this problem? I'm using the 360 add-on.

I have the 360 add-on and I've just ordered Babel... this is a bad news, i need subtitles because I'm Italian. :(

Report it to Amir, maybe they can issue a patch:

Unless one is a master linguist, everyone will need subtitles at some point for Babel. Major spoken languages include Berber, Arabic, Spanish, Japanese, French and English. Also sign language and written Japanese.

The North American HD DVD release from Paramount has a choice of English or French as the audio track. Hard coded (permenant) subtitles appear when the primary audio language is not spoken. English for the hearing inpaired, or Spanish subtitles are optional.

I just watched my copy last night; an amazing film.

The subtitles all worked fine for me, playing on my XA1.

I ran the updates, and it's still a no-go. I flipped to random scenes, and it does it throughtout the entire movie. I'd say 70% of the subs just flash on and off real fast, and the rest stay on. I checked the other languages, and it's the same thing, at the same spots. I checked the subtitles on all my other discs, including ones from Paramount, and they work just fine. Hopefully there's nothing wrong with my Xbox.

Guess I gotta run out to Best Buy tomorrow. If the next one doesn't work, I'll see if I can get the standard DVD.

I'm playing it on the 360 add-on right now (just got it yesterday). I turned on English subtitles, not SDH, and flipping through the chapters the subtitles are working fine.

Are these the subtitles made by the Xbox or the subtitles that are actually a part of the video? There are subtitles that are actually a part of the video itself (The subtitles of the non-english speaking roles are non removeable) and not an overlay made created by the player.

It's the same if I turn the English subtitles on, or leave them off so that they're only there for the non-English parts.

i'm having the same problems as the op. good to know it's probably just a bad disc and not the 360 add on as it seems not many others are having this problem. by the way, this is my first post but i've been lurking here for a while now. thanks to everyone for all the great info.

Do you have the same problem? This is bad...

Maybe is a configuration problem... what resolution are you using? 720p? 1080i/p? others?

i'm outputting at 720p and have watched a couple other movies with no problems. i'm going to exchange for another disc later today so i'll report back with the results.

Mine's set to 720p as well. I'll check if 1080i makes a differance after I get home from work.

i just exchanged it and had the same problems. i was also having problems with freezing while trying to fast forward. i bought it at best buy and exchanged it at the same store so i don't know if they got a bad batch of discs or what, very strange. if only i spoke eight different languages i wouldn't need the subtitles.

I tried changing it to 1080i, no go.

Mine had the same problem with fast forwarding. It would totally freeze up, and I'd have to turn the 360 off and on to get it working again. I'm just gonna ask for the standard DVD. Which Best Buy did you get your's? I got mine at the one in Wyomissing, PA.

My comment is off topic, but just wondering if this movie is one that is enjoyable to watch multiple times? Debating blind buying. I gut says it is a good movie but not one that I will want to watch again.

Thoughts?

Rent it if you're not sure. If you like it and see yourself watching again, buy it.

Please make sure your Xbox 360 HD DVD player software is up-to-date. You can find the latest update on Xbox.com right here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360hddvdplayer/download.htm.

If you are on Xbox Live (gold or silver), just sign in and then launch the HD DVD player to make sure you receive the latest update.

FYI this is another bug fixed in the upcoming software update for the 360. I did say we had fixed a lot of things, hadn't I? :)

Decent movie for the most part. Played flawlessly.

Not worth $30. Total ripoff. One of the worst looking HD DVD transfers I own. IN fact many of my SD DVDs look much better upconverted than this one. Now if it were $19 I wouldn't mind so much, but lately the $30 seem to be the most common for no reason other than greed and the last three I bought have poor PQ.

4~6 weeks, possibly. It's coming with the spring Dashboard update.

My 360 would lock up if I FF'd or REW'd for more than 10 seconds during Babel. I had not applied any updates bec. I never signed up for a LIVE account, I signed up and after the update the issue is completely resolved. The subtitles are now completely showing up whereas before I was only seeing some of them. Many of them flashed by too quickly to read.

Well he’s a weird guy. I worked with a soldier like that in the Army. The guy had been a kindergarten teacher in California, his student loans became too much so he joined Military Intelligence as a linguist and took advantage of the loan repayment option. He regularly read books and spoke in English, Spanish, German, Serbo-Croatian, Arabic, Persian Farsi and French. He was an odd to put it mildly.
