I have this heavy oldie in a guest bedroom and would like to use the component inputs for the use of a DVD player. For some reason, when using this input, it has that old scrambled cable channel look. (wide diagonal lines with a lot of motion) I suppose I may have wiffed a setting, but nothing seeming obvious. I would be very happy if I could figure out how to use an input better than s-video. Someone, please help, I don't want to pick this thing up again anytime soon. It, otherwise, appears to be working just fine and I do not want to replace it for this purpose until it dies on its own.

That sounds like some kind of sync issue. Check your cables and connections. Make sure you have the correct jack to jack connections, the sync signal is imbedded in the luma signal, Y(green connector).
I'm not familiar with the set, is it widescreen? If so, setup the DVD player for 16:9.

I have tried a few different cables, cheap to pricey. I have triple-checked the cabling on each attempt, almost to the point of embarrassment. The TV is not physically a widescreen unit. However, it was an early and relatively expensive digital video compatible CRT unit that did 16:9 very well for its time. It automatically senses widescreen media and adjusts to a letterbox. I does this whether you use s-video or composite as well. Is there any possibility that there may be service codes that could help me? I, unfortunately, do not have a service manual. Yet...
Thanks

You have most likely encountered a problem that was common to many of these sets (including my 32XBR250). You will need to enter the service menu and change the HOSC parameter. In my case it was set at 7 and I had to increase it to 11 at which point the banding (across the screen usually from bright objects) completely disappeared.....hope this helps.

Thanks phannon, I have found and copied service data on the unit and will try the adjustment that you recommended. With 258 potential adjustments, it is nice to have a place to start. I admittedly do not know what all of these parameters are for. Wish me luck!

Mnky:
Just a quick hint for adjustments.....if you change the parameter number, do not "write" the new number to memory, just exit the service menu. The new adjustment should stick until the power is removed (pull the plug), that way if something is screwed up, unplugging the set should return it to the original settings. If all is well and you are happy with the results, go back into the service menu and do the "save" routine (press mute then enter, if memory serves). I did go through all the parameters and recorded them (being careful...) before I changed anything, that way if worse came to worse I knew the original values. Some of the values might be different in the different modes, so go into the service menu in, say, movie mode each time.
