this thread is only for posts about hd dvd.

moderators - please delete any post from this thread that mentions bd or "the other format". also, please delete any posts listing reasons why somebody does not like hd dvd.

if hd dvd did not exist i would only have bought an sd dvd player and waited a couple more years to get into hi. def.

1. needed a good source for a new projector that makes sd look close to as good as sd gets
2. hd software quality. advanced codecs, features, extras.
3. price. $400 for the a1 including hdmi cable. (oct. '06)
4. hardware features including analog 5.1 (a1), ethernet, non-volatile memory, usb (waiting for good stuff there)
5. most of the movies i like are warner/universal
6. region free.

imports are fun to see what the other side of the world sees.

7. HDi which i knew was also going to be part of windows vista. IMO software integration will be important in the future.
8. managed copy in the future (or whatever works to rip to a hd). file sizes using advanced codecs are smaller. IMO mpeg2 is a non-starter for hi. def. i don't want to buy disks that are encoded with it due to the file size.
9. planned support for downloading of extra content. IMO the disk should be a key that unlocks added content.
10. use of dvd production lines. IMO this lets smaller studios and disk manufacturers support hi. def. easier.
11. combo disks are useful.... wish they were cheaper.
12. hd dvd seems well designed overall and seems flexible enough to add features over time. this is from my perspective as an ee.

Found a new A1 at Best Buy for $399. So far I'm enjoying all my films.

So fir me it was cost of player and a library of films I'd buy. Hopfully a lot more discs come out. I'm at about 2 HDDVDs a week now... got babel and hollywoodland this week and the departed and robin hood (1938) last week...

Because the 360 add on was only $200 and I had $85 in reward zone bucks and a nice big gift card and I got it almost for nothing. Also, the movies I like the most are out on hd-dvd.

It was either that other console that has a 3 in it's name, or the 360 and the 360 came out first, so I got it. If that other console had come out a year earlier, I'd have it instead and be watching movies on it, but I'd be secretly disappointed that I couldn't watch any of my favorite films on universal on it and my appreciation for quality films would probably be decimated by titles like pirates of the carribean (yeah, I know, hd-dvd has some bad titles too, but for my taste, the movies I want are mostly available on hd-dvd). I'd probably be on here talking about how hd-dvd sucks because there aren't any movies out for it or something like that.

Because we can create our own HD-DVD on a standard DVD ... Giving HDcam owners a way to view our footage and share with other HD-DVD owners.

Why do we need yet another thread on this topic that has been well covered since it's release in April of 07? What more can be said that hasn't already been said in all the other threads....the subject has officially jumped the shark.

For me i choose HDDVD because of price, quality and title availability (thanks to the region free nature of HD DVD).

Aside frm the obvious superb PQ and AQ, 10 reasons I like HD DVD because:

1. It leverages DVD technology to minimize many of the risks of a new format, minimizing risk of future failures of a new technology

2. Repliction facilities of HD DVD will be readily available to the largest mainstream AND the smallest independent studios. The ready availability of many replication services will encourage a supply-and-demand type of economic framework that will result in the smallest prices paid by the studios, and most likely the cheapest prices for the consumer.

3. The HD DVD group has generally had very solid management decision-making resulting in at worst only a minor delay here or there. They came out with great PQ and AQ from day one and have stayed that way.

4. The have interactivity, Internet, and PQ, and AQ standards so that players will not quickly become obsolete by not being able to play features of future releases. This is shown by the generally complete feature sets of G1 and G2 players.

5. They are a very solid profit-making business model. A best guess is that they initally had small subsidizations (considered a common practice on new technology) on G1 units that ended a few months after launch and are now running in the black. Since subsidizations cannot be and shouldn't be sustainable indefinitely, this was a critical issue for HD DVD which they handled very well, as they have most every strategic decision they have made to date. Not being able to do this would bring into question the entire economic underpinning of any new format, but again, they took care of it right away.

6. The HD DVD group has tended to underplay their early successes. They do not talk big and make large, unsubstantiated claims. HD DVD has generally avoided this and their promotion tends to reflect theit business practices - well-thought out and conservative.

7. They have taken the wise step to package their technology in such a manner that it can be incorporated inexpensively in other brand players, which will bring the new technology to many more people at very affordable price points, all the while still alllowing them to make a fair profit.

8. Even though studios can act independently, HD DVD releases across the HD DVD supported studios have been very consistent in using the efficient, mature, and highly-regarded VC-1 codec on the HD30 dual-layer disc. This is an excellent combination for showing sterling PQ. While other codecs will also work, this combination seems to be more consistently excellent than others, in part due to the quality of the authoring tools. Also generally in any endeavor, the more things are standardized, the better.

9. HD DVD currently has some very good IME on some titles. This though again is in the hands of the studios supporting HD DVD in terms of whether they choose to do this.

10. HD DVD players provide superb up-conversion of standard DVD, comparable in many opinions to what is produced on more expensive standard DVD players. Also, the CD playback of the current batch of HD DVD players is comparable, in various opinions, to some expensive players. This again reflects very strongly on the integrity of the HD DVD organization of the desire to always give the customer great value for their money spent.
