I purchased the HL-S6187W 2 days ago this is my first dlp set, I have a couple questions for the experts.

1. when watching blu ray via sony bdp s1, i see what i would call grain in the background it kind of looks like snow, when you think of an average tv turned on with no ant. or cable that snow effect is what i see in the background but alot more faint i only see in certain scenes. I apologize for the crude description but i dont know the terms as well as most so again it looks like moviing snow in the color whatever part of the picture it shows on. it is connected via hdmi directly to the set

question to any owners of this set willing to share their picture settings that would be great

I ran the avia disc but i didnt completely understand that either with using the test patterns

i'm just trying to learn all i can to squeeze the best possible picture out of this set
thank you in advance for any help

Mike

MrTanMan,

It sounds like you are describing film grain. It's normal. Beyond that, some disks will exhibit noise, which may be in the original film print, or caused by excess compression. Not all Blu-ray disks are created equal, just like not all DVDs are created equal.

When shopping for Blu-ray disks, be sure to use The Tier System for Blu-ray (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=753726) thread. Initially, I would suggest you limit yourself to tier0 and tier1 titles listed in the first post, so you can get a feel for what an excellent high-definition picture looks like on your screen. Another excellent source of reviews is HighDefDigest.com (http://www.highdefdigest.com).

As far as settings, what is the manufacturing date for your display? It should be on the back. If it is after November 2006, you should be able to disable the digital overscan, which will result in a slightly sharper picture. For instructions on how to do this, state the following message in the Samsung 1080p Owner's Thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=665890):

Hello, I recently purchased a Samsung HL-S6187W with a November [or December or January] build date. My understanding is that I can disable overscan, thereby enabling 1:1 pixel mapping, by changing an option in the service menu. Could someone point me to the instructions for this?Changing this setting may also eliminate any noise introduced by the processing in your Samsung, because the 1080p signal from the player will be output directly to your screen.

On the Samsung x87, only units built November and later can make this change. In earlier units, the software setting would not save -- you could change it, but it would reset every time you turned off the TV.

The AVIA disk you mentioned is a DVD calibration disk. You can follow it's advice, and it will probably help, but it won't deliver the best possible picture for Blu-ray. For that, we'll have to wait for the Blu-ray version of AVIA, which is coming in a few months.
