Iam not sure if they are releasing it on BD but the lady in red certainly hopes not. She told me herself that she doesn't look good in blu and I totally agree. :D

will the "MATRIX" hd dvd really kick start things? What 'things' do you think it will kickstart?
HD DVD has already started and is going well.
Blu-Ray has already started and is going well.

Do you mean will it kickstart sales of The Matrix? Assuredly ;)

EDIT: Ah! maybe you meant will it kickstart J6P into HD movies? Good question, I hope it does.

I guess when she does go blu, then we will have to call her the Lady in Purple. :D

I own one HD-DVD movie right now (I rent my HD-DVD's through Netflix) but I will buy Matrix in a heartbeat.

However, I don't think the release will kick start anything unless the hardware folks flood the market with cheaper players for the massess. HD home movie entertainment will remain a niche for the foreseeable future unless this happens (no research or survey's were done or found to back this up and no small animals were injured by this opinion). :)

Look at it this way, it'll help....

I personally feel if there is a gear to kick, it'll be the :::crosses fingers::: starting flow of the expected 300 titles (Universals 100 included) plus, that should/could be well under way around the same time (coincidentally) the $200 players start to show. :)

If Matrix HD DVD is released months ahead of the BD version (due to BD-J's PIP issues), then I believe it will create a lot of buzz for the HD DVD format.

Time will tell if the Futureshop date is accurate. FS has been wrong many times in the past. While it is a good sign, I am going to remain skeptical that WB would ship out the HD DVD version first.

Those hoping for an HD DVD win should wish for the Matrix series to come out on HD DVD way before BD to give them some more good anchors for the format. Those hoping for a BD win should wish for "Batman Begins" to get released on BD soon to reduce the strength of one of HD DVD's current anchors and for the Matrix series to hit both formats at the same time.

Warners has been saying that they were going to be more strictly neutral, especially with their THD format coming out this summer, incorporating both disks.

Right now, with the relative sales of both formats being what they appear to be, it would seem very strange to ship HD DVD before Blu-ray.

I think the OP may have at least two separate questions:

1. Will Matrix jump start both formats?
2. Will Matrix give HD DVD a leg up over Blu-ray?

I think the answer in both cases is pretty much NO, but for different reasons.

As to both formats, I don't think that older titles are that important. The reason is that everyone already owns a copy. Matrix, in particular, is not Star Wars or a Disney perennial for which this might be an exception. A new title like POTC III or SpiderMan III has much more potential for helping.

As to Matrix giving HD DVD an advantage, I don't think so at this point, assuming Warners ships both at the same time. In fact it could end up helping Blu-ray more if fence sitters see Blu-ray as the one that has the "edge" overall.

One movie does not make a difference.
I hate when BR supporters talk about Casino Royale like is the end of the world.
I do not think Matrix will make a big diffence either.

Yep...both formats..most likely at the same time with the HD-DVD release. Even if it's several months later, I'll wait for blu-ray since I hate combo DVD+R disc.

WTF is 'JP6'?

It's a derogatory term for those that don't obsess over A/V equipment all day long. It stands for Joe 6 Pack.

I wish I had bluray so I could pick up Casino in hd but I am going to pick it up in SD anyways. But we have Children of Men (which I think everyone will pick up that has a hd dvd player just as everyone with a bluray player will pick up casino). And we have Happy Feet and The March of the Penguins, both big hits in the theatre. But HD DVD distributers need to pick up the slack soon because bluray has sin city, pirates of the carribean, and dejavu coming out. I just saw this as High-Def Digest that A scanner darkly and Dog Day afternoon are coming out in April for both formats! http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Warner/Disc_Announcements/Warner_Brings_Scanner_Darkly,_Dog_Day_Afternoon_to_Blu-ray,_HD_DVD/486\

Joe "Sixpack"

The average consumer that finally decides a winner of a format war. Definitely NOT an enthusiast.

Joe "Sixpack" currently watches DVD's on a $39 Coby player on a standard definition tube set and just MAY have a $199-$299 Home Theatre in the box solution for surround sound if he has splurged.

Legend/myth has it that he jumped onboard DVD with "The Matrix" and probably decided the VHS/Beta war when he decided he just HAD to have "Top Gun" and those porno tapes.

I think that matrix IS a disc that people would re buy even if they
have the sd version.

to me it is one of a handfull of "must buy in high def" titles

if hd dvd can get a 2 month jump on blu ray
I think it would be a huge win.

Could Cypher be seen as one of those "HD-DVD is falling apart! The sky is falling!" type of people?

Cypher: "I know what you're thinking, cause I've been thinking the same thing. Why oh why didn't I invest in the BLU pill?"

I ended up buying Casino 3 times!

I think bundling The Matrix with some HD players could really move some units.

Not Matrix as much, but something like LOTR or Star Wars I think could definitely tip the scales if it was exclusive to one side.

They could be waiting until there is enough of an install base to warrant the cost. The release will continue to sell well after its out, but they like to see big first week and first month sales.

Well, with Warner Bros. current stance of releasing movies in both Blu-ray and HD DVD, they will probably release The Matrix in both formats. That wouldn't give either side an advantage.

The Matrix has already been delayed for so long already (most likely due to Blu Ray) that there's no way they'll come out at different times. It'll be a dual format release on the same day for sure.
