View Full Version : Does Blu Ray....?
Emannikcufesin 02-22-07, 06:22 PM I see alot of posts of HD DVD owners willing to buy import movies due to HD's lack of Region coding. A huge boost for HD fans like myself, so I have to ask is Blu Ray region coded or is this an exclusive goody for the HD DVD format?
hmurchison 02-22-07, 06:29 PM Some BD movies are region encoded I believe. According to Amir there are no region encoded HD DVD players. I love that.

And if they do, it will remove one of the benefits of HD-DVD over Blu-ray. Region encoding is so annoying, the lack of it on HD-DVD was possibly the one non-price related facet that made me jump into HD-DVD when I did instead of waiting.
It would be cutting off their nose to spite their face, as the saying goes...

Studios never learn.Amir posted that one of the studios that doesn't release on HD DVD wanted it in the DVD forum. One could take that as an indication that this is something that studio might want HD DVD to add before they would release movies on it. It might be a tough choice for the HD DVD camp between upsetting some customers and gaining a studio, if it came to that.

DanI would argue that it appears the have learned...well, the HD DVD side has. Watching all those third parties make money selling region free DVD players probably helped convince them that it's a great selling feature.

Appears they may have started already, I was looking at some Japanese import titles and all of them were listed as "Region Code 2". For example:

MANY sites have the discs still listed as "R1, R2, ect" even though the disc is region free. The disc is still Region Free BUT it was released in Region 2 thats all the significance that this has. Ignore the hold over from DVD as they may not have been ale to remove it (or were too lazy to). The only sense this makes to me is to differentiate the RELEASE region of the movie not that the disc has region coding.....

Its because of the HD-DVD also being a combo. The HD-DVD is region free but the DVD side is still region coded (same for us here)

Also if the players are region free, does it matter about the disc?

The way HD-DVD advantages have been disappearing, I wonder if region coding will be implemented sooner than later.
abr27440 02-23-07, 01:30 AM Even IF region coding is ever implemented, current players will remain region free. So I could care less.
darinp2 02-23-07, 02:32 AM Even IF region coding is ever implemented, current players will remain region free. So I could care less. Why do you say that? Is it because an insider said something to that affect, or because you have an actual guarantee? If they go to HD17, HD34 and HD51 discs it would be pretty easy for them to implement region encoding in a firmware release that would support those discs and if a person didn't upgrade their firmware, they couldn't play those new disc types. Now if there is something in the documentation for the XBOX360 add-on and Toshiba players that says that they won't be region encoded, then that would be a different story. I haven't looked at the documentation for mine, so if somebody could point out where they say that, if they do, then I would be interested in hearing where it is.

That's a good point Darin. I would like to take your comment a step further. If Region Coding were implemented on HD DVD's and it meant the addition of Fox as a supporting studio, would it be worth it to you (not specifically Darin, but any HD DVD user)? For me, I would say yes. I have never imported a movie and frankly the cost just doesn't seem worth it to me.
