I've been reading this forum for the past 6 months but this is my first post. I was hoping someone here could help me out.

My situation is that I just bought a new HT system but i know very little about all of this. I bought a 50 inch Samsung Plasma, an LG DVD/CD upconvert player, a Harmon/Kardon AVR245 receiver, and have my Dish Network VIP622. My question is that when I view a High Definition movie thru my VIP622, the sound is amazing and I am getting 5.1 surround with certain sounds coming from each individual speaker in the back. However, when I play any DVD or CD including DVD Audio Discs, i get sound from the back but not like when I view the movie from the VIP622.

Do I have something incorrectly setup from the DVD player to the receiver? When I play a movie from my VIP622, my receiver automatically picks up the signal and it will show something like, 3.2.1, but with my DVD player it just says Dolby surround.

Please help. Thanks. :(

What cables do you have going from the DVD player to receiver?

I have an HDMI out to my receiver which then goes on to my Plasma for the video. Then I have one for the audio, which i can't remember, i know it is not optical.

Edit: I have a digital coax cable for audio frm the DVD player to the receiver.

Check your DVD settings. Go to the menu and see if there is any setting for PCM or Bitstream. Select Bitstream and listen.

Where do I check for this? On the DVD player or on the receiver? If it is on the DVD player, then do I need to have a DVD playing to check for these setting?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the replys. It was the Bitstream setting as well as other settings in the DVD player. Now it works just fine.

Thanks once again.

Yeah, that's what I was going to suggest next.

Also, when you first load a DVD, access the menu and check the sound settings (usually under setup or languages.) Sometimes the default isn't 5.1. Like last night, I was watching Alien, and it defaults to Dolby Surround.

If you want DTS, that's rarely the default. In fact, I've only seen one disc where DTS was the default sound setting.
