It's driving me crazy!!
Do I buy them from France,Spain the UK.?
Are some better transfers than others?Purchased The Pianist from AmazonUK came to $30 delivered which is cheaper than exploited.com.(it must have been on sale paid 13LBS 12.76 to be exact.)
Amazon FR shipping is way to expensive 10 euros. So many titles coming out.
Any helpful tips.
It's making my head hurt
Gangs of New York
Crash
Oliver Twist
Ran
Road Warrior
Finding Neverland, just to mention a few
WHERE THE HECK DO I BUY THEM(sorry for shouting)

No apologies required for shouting, IMHO. I completely understand your frustration. I've got enough domestic (i.e. US) releases to keep me busy, but eventually I'll want to look for these European/UK/Japanese releases of titles available on BD-only in the US/Canada.

Or, if there are a lot of imports I want and I add it all up, I may decide the additional cost for importing them is comparable to the cost of a Blu-ray player, and I'll just pick up the cheapest competent Blu-Ray standalone. (Please, I'm not trying to start a BD vs HD-DVD flame war here - just looking at the economics of the situation.) This situation isn't likely to occur any time soon: the number of US BD releases available in HD-DVD elsewhere is in the low dozens (if that), and my desired titles in that group is a much smaller subset.

But I wouldn't mind knowing whether the UK version is better thanks to default English language settings, etc, or if the French release had some bonus features the others missed, etc.

Here are a few.
Xploited cinema (http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/index.php)

CD Japan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/)

Yes Asia (http://us.yesasia.com/en/index.aspx)

Amazon UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/)

Amazon France (http://www.amazon.fr/)

Prices may be higher, shipping will cost too.

In quantity, Amazon.fr is ~$35-32/title (including 1-5 day shipping on 4-8 titles, respectively).

I believe www.dvdgo.com is the primary source for Spanish HD DVDs, I believe (still no Saw, Saw II or Underworld Evolution listed). I'd love to be proven wrong, though... :) ...information from Spain seems more difficult to find than France/U.K.

Just bought La Haine from SendIt.com - they also have an ipoints program thing you can sign up for. I answered a few free 1 point polls and also bought Serenity from them and I'm almost up to a £5 coupon which is quite worth it - almost works out to a 5% rebate. I considered using Xploited to support Tony, but it was almost $7 cheaper after shipping at SendIt and I've already bought my fair share from Tony :)

£34.89 = $68.16

Here's an easy trick to do currency conversions. Just type "£(price) to $" in a google search bar.

Alternatively, for currency conversions keep this site bookmarked:
https://www.currenciesdirect.com/

Several good tips posted already in this thread. One more comes to mind. Some of the French releases e.g. Rambo I, II, II and Total Recall are also being released in Australia; at a considerably cheaper price, certainly when you include shipping.

Take a look at:
http://www.dvdcrave.com/
http://www.ezydvd.com.au/

One interesting Oz disc is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It's actually the US combo disc (only the outer cover differs slightly), but sold as a non-combo i.e. at a non-combo price. So it could be cheaper getting KKBB from Oz than from somewhere in the US :D

PS Don't forget the German Amazon.de site. A couple of releases that seem to be unique to Germany are: Das Parfum, Renaissance, Arizona Dream and Basic Instinct.

Here in Canada, when we declare goods at the U.S. border, crossing back into Canada, we have to pay taxes, but no duty. But, the taxes are 14%(Federal plus provincial).
If we get parcels shipped to us via the mail, there's a $5 charge for them to open the parcel, plus the 14% taxes.
If we get parcels shipped via Fedex or UPS, there's a brokerage house fee, plus 14% taxes. So, it's cheaper to cross the border and buy your HD DVD's and bring them back across physically. Sometimes if you get a nice border guard, he'll let you slide by without paying taxes.

It seems the german, english, and french Canal+ releases are 100% the same (except for different cover artwork and cover text language). I bought Rambo1 at amazon.de and imported parts 2 and 3 from France. Same behaviour on all discs: when they're inserted the first time, the player brings up a menue and asks for the default language. So you're only one button press away from switching the disc to english. The player seems to store the information somewhere so you would not have to enter it again...

Only obstacle is to get through the french language Amazon ordering system ... ;)

I don't think so. I've imported alot of DVDs, and I do not recall paying any taxes/duties on them, unless it was included in the price of shipping. On a side note, I've found shipping discs from Australia to the US isn't cheap, unless you don't mind waiting a long while.

Damn! Another advantage of living in the US... for AV/audiophiles importing discs anyway :)

When you order discs from another country e.g. amazon.co.jp, they take off their local sales tax from the total before you complete your purchase. So the discs are exported to you without any sales tax added, and then depending on which country it is into which you're importing the discs, your local customs people will add your local sales tax/VAT which you have to pay when taking possession of your package.

lazerfan detailed this for Canada. In the UK the customs people charge import tax (VAT) when the discs hit UK shores. This tax is 17.5% of the total value (incl. shipping charges) of the package. And the the UK postal service (Royal Mail) adds a £4 admin fee on top
The threshold above which this import charge is applied is anything declared for more than £18. In effect this means that you can safely import 1 disc at a time without risking being stung for customs charges.

With regards to cheap shipping, yes. It's the usual trade-off between cost and time :(
Depends how impatient you are :D

this is a copy of the UK DVD cover, note the also available on HD DVD. I can only take it at face value, we will have to wait an see if / when it turns up.

My list is purely a personal copy I run at home and post once in a while to wet appetities. I leave it to others to run web pages. Mine was just started for my own interest as everyone kept telling me there were no new releases but my own purchases had not gone down at all, and if anything they had gone up. I am sure it is not complete but should help some wanting a simple list.

I've used all these services except Yes Asia. I found the shipping from Xploited and Amazon UK to be the best. Amazon.fr has been really slow with the rambo series. I wish I would have ordered from Xploited. But Amazon.fr even with shipping came out cheaper.

Shipping was less than 4 bucks. A price less than $26 shipped for this movie was a lot less than I expected. I was assuming somewhere between 30-40 bucks.

I'm not missing something am I? Can I really get this movie from Amazon UK for $25.84 shipped?

RUNNING SCARED is amazing !!!

Just got it yesterday from Tony at Exploited.
The movie itself is GREAT. Action packed, suspenseful, violent, excellent story, great cinematography, and it has heart too.

Paul Walkers best performance ever. The russian kid was an amazing little actor himself.

I'm a new poster, and I don't usually go on and on like this about a movie, but man was I LOVING EVERY MINUTE of this movie.

The characterizations were deep, and the setting selections were awesome.
How AMAZING is the ice rink scene in the blacklights ??

now for the PQ and AQ
to start I am using xbox360 addon, optical cable and VGA cable.

The SOUND WAS THE BEST I'vE heard on ANY HD-DVD I own.

My girlfriend kept commenting how LOUD it was eventhough I had it set 10 points lower than normal for my HD movies.

The sound was UNREAL. I can't explain it any better. I wish all my movies sounded this good. (maybe with the spring update it will)

and the PQ - STUNNING absolutely STUNNING

I LOVE this freaking movie, and am SO GLAD I BLIND BOUGHT IT from TOny at xploited. Do NOT hesitate if you think you want this movie at all.

If that's a legitimate cover then I'm a leprechaun. For a start, Sony hasn't used the Columbia Tri-Star logo for at least two years. And the HD DVD logo is obviously faked. They've just stuck the letters "HD" before the DVD logo. HD DVD has its own logo. It looks like a poor rip-off of a 1995 VHS cover. There are so many things obviously wrong with this cover I could go on and on. For a start: since when did Sony start supporting HD DVD? Where on earth did you find this?

If we get parcels shipped via Fedex or UPS, there's a brokerage house fee, plus 14% taxes. So, it's cheaper to cross the border and buy your HD DVD's and bring them back across physically. Sometimes if you get a nice border guard, he'll let you slide by without paying taxes.

One more thing comes to mind. Are there any types of goods that are exempt from tax when importing into Canada e.g. books.
I ask, as in the UK books and children's clothes are two examples of goods that are exempt of VAT i.e. you could order $200 worth of books in a single order with Amazon.com and pay no import duty/VAT when they go through UK customs.

Just wondering if anyone has considered that saving $10-$20+ surcharge for imported titles quickly adds up and that money could be put towards a PS3 or other BD player? Or that at some point, these titles will appear in both formats in the US?

I made the mistake of paying premium dollars for imports of Leon and the longer, A.Smithee version of Dune on DVD only to see them eventually come out for less in the States. Except in the case of better PQ like Total Recall, I'd rather be format neutral and not have to import HD-DVDs. To each, there own, I guess....

We have a Free Trade Pact with the U.S. and Mexico. Most things are duty-free, but I do believe almost everything is subject to sales tax at the border. Now, if fill your tank with gas and eat a meal in a restaurant, there's no taxes there.
I have no idea about books. I believe within Canada the only items that are tax free, are certain groceries. I believe there is no sales tax on milk, but there IS tax on potato chips, candy bars, soda pop, ect.

Yes, I have considered that point-of-view, as I mentioned in my post (#2, above). But there are elements to the equation that are not financial in nature:

Do I want to buy a region-encoded format?

Do I want to purchase software (and hardware design) primarily supported by the same company that installed illegal rootkits on PCs from CDs and strong-armed EMI and/or Pink Floyd into releasing an SACD instead of DVD-A of DSOTM, then completely bailed on the format?

Do I want another disk-playing component in my AV rack? Does my receiver have a spare HDMI input for it? Or will I have to use analogs and component video?

So there is more to deal with than the base cost of the import disks. And therefore, as you said, to each their own...

You didnt mention all their recent tricks corrupting the DVD format (zero size files and corrupted IFOs) to try and stop them being copied, resulting in legitimate releases not being able to be played on some players and many computer drives...

Lionsgate has worldwide video distribution for Saw 3. Saw and Saw 2 will be available from Spain on HD DVD.

“SAW I-III” in the spring 2008 on HD-DVD (http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.areadvd.de%2Fblu-ray%2F2008%2FSAW_1-3_BD_HD_DVD.shtml&langpair=de%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF8)

"Cinema world plans the publication of “SAW I-III” for the spring 2008 on Blu ray Disc and HD DVD. The offerer on request could not call an exact period for the publication yet. Likewise also still no details are well-known.

In the USA the horror series is driven out by Lionsgate. The independent offerer however exclusively sets on Blu ray the Disc, why the films are available so far only on Blu ray Disc and not on HD DVD there."
