View Full Version : Is Sony 30HS420 HDCP compliant (PS3 HDMI problem)

I have had my PS3 attached to Sony 30HS420 through one of the component inputs, and everything worked perfectly. However, I was getting some ground loop interference on the picture, so I decided to switch to HDMI cable.

So, I plugged everything in, kept the component cables plugged in too, so that I can navigate through the PS3 menus and switch inputs. When I switch to HDMI on the PS3 and switch to Video 7 on the TV (which is the HDMI input) I get no picture at all.

Then, I disconnected component cables and I tried the known remedy of holding the power button/sensor on PS3 for 5 seconds, still nothing - no picture.

I know that PS3 requires the TV to be HDCP compliant when it's connected through HDMI, but I thought this TV was HDCP compliant? Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong here?

Even if your TV isn't HDCP compliant (it is, for the record), you should still get the main menu over HDMI/DVI as it isn't protected content. Only games and movies are.

I wish someone with this TV could confirm that it works with PS3 over the HDMI. I tried everything I could, and there's just no picture showing up :(

I guess I'll start troubleshooting by testing the cable first. My problem is, the PS3 is the only HDMI device I own, I'll have to bring the cable to some store like Best Buy and ask store clerks to test it somehow. I have no idea if they'll be willing to do that.

I'm having problems with my 30HS420 and my new Samsung DTB-H260F HD tuner. Connecting the two together with the HDMI cable works for about 30 minutes, then the pictures goes all black & white. have to turn the unit off for a while before i can get color picture back. Switching to the component video connection between the two devices works fine with no color problems, but the HDMI doesn't seem to be HDCP compliant. Sony says it's the tuners fault (of course they say that...), but I don't know what to think.
Any suggestions? Any help would be much appreciated.

I have a PS3 60 hooked up via HDMI to my 30HS420 in the bedroom using a Blue Jeans Cable HDMI cable and it has no problems at all. I've played games and watched BR movies with it setup this way.

I have a 27HS420 (4:3 aspect ratio) and I've had some very rare problems with PS3 HDMI.

I've had the video go out for about 3 seconds (about 5 times in the weeks I've owned the system). Also, I've noticed if I turn the PS3 on while in service mode I don't get any video until I turn the TV off and on again.

Well, in the meantime I've received a replacement cable from monoprice, and I still have the same problem. I'm suspecting more and more that it's a PS3 hardware issue and that it's HDMI out must be busted, but I'll have to test it on another TV set with this cable to make sure. I'm also thinking of buying another, more expensive HDMI cable and trying with that, and then returning it to store if it doesn't work :\

I own the same TV and a PS3 20Gig.
I'm curious about what you are saying about a ground loop interference on the picture.
I'm having a slight problem with blu ray movies only.
Everything else in 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i is perfect; standard dvd, PS2/PS3 games.
But when I watch Blu ray movies, there is a color problem that appears, like an interference kinda like it pushes a red tone, or green , quite annoying. I ordered new component cables and if it doesn't work, I guess I'll switch to HDMI to see if that fixes the problem.

MaxDam77, I can't help you, I have the interference on everything, as long as the color shown is something like dark blue :\ It's quite visible.

I did more tests with my configuration, and now I'm more confused than ever!

- I tested the new cable in a Best Buy store with their TV and DVD player, and the cable works.

- I tested the HDMI input on my TV by connecting it to my computer through the HDMI->DVI cable. TV shows the picture from the computer fine.

- I tested the HDMI output from my PS3 by connecting the PS3 to the LCD monitor that I use for my PC. Again, I used the same HDMI->DVI cable. Sure enough, the PS3 picture shows up on my monitor just fine! PS3 even recognized the HDMI display attached and asked if I want to switch to that connection, all by itself.

So each individual component very obviously works, and yet when I plug the PS3 to a TV it's not showing any picture. Furthermore, I got a reply above from motoman, saying that it all works with the same TV.

I'm suspecting that my TV maybe has an older firmware than motomans? Maybe the older firmware doesn't have as solid handshaking or something? Can I check this somehow and update the firmware, or call a technician to do it?

Don't know what firmware mine is but I bought the TV in Nov. 04. I can check the build date on the back if it will help you out.

Please do, if you don't mind. Checking that will be my last step before I call Sony tech support.

I'll check it tonight.

Build date on the back of mine says November 2004 DA4
Not sure what the DA4 is.

Marconelly - I've got the same box and I'm having the same problems... did you ever get this resolved?

Thanks,

I'm having this same issue with my Samsung H260F and Sony 34HS420 when viewing OTA via HDMI (1080i). It worked fine for a couple months, then all of a sudden a couple months ago the pictures started flickering. After about 30 minutes (eg. one episode of The Office) the color in the picture will start to flicker. Sometimes just to black and white, sometimes with just hint of red, and then back to color for a few seconds and back to black and white. I'm glad I was finally able to find someone else with the same problem.

I keep hoping to read about an explanation or solution on AVS...

Thanks.

Did you check to make sure your PS3 has the latest firmware upgrade?
I use one too with my 34" version of your set, but I use the component hookup, as I am already using the hdmi for my HD DVD player. No problems with component whatsoever.
