Hello everyone, this is my first post. I think it may be unsolvable, but I was toldthat if it can be, this was the place to ask. I have a CRT 1080i JVC AV-30W585

opps can't post links sorry it's on jvc's page

It's my first hdtv and I really like it. I play my 360 on it, and use my PC on it via s-video. Well, I was under the impresssion that I would be able to get a DVI-HDMI cable for my PC.

So anyhow, my cable arrived today. I've been wanting to play some games through it to get better resolution and better image quality over the s-video.

I have a asus ati x1600 pro, nice card, decent enough for me, with dvi, tv-out etc.

When I plugged it in, my pc made a sound, and connected. So anyhow, I select digital-in on my tv... and blank. Nothing.

I check things on my PC, and the cable seems to be working fine. In the ati control panel, it says the max resolution is 1920x1080, 60hz and lists the model number of my tv. I'm thinking I must be close. I do some reading and it seems I have to match the resolution. I try my best, selecting 1920x1080 30hz interlaced.

No go. I fiddle some more but it won't work. Sucks seeing as it acts like it is working. I search for my manual to find if it lists the native resolution, and in the specs under hdmi I read-

hdmi jack x 1 the digital-in is not compatible with picture signals of a personal computer

darn I guess I just wasted my money on a cable. Is there no way around this? I guess I can't update my tv, but I was hoping maybe someone here would have some experience or more knowledge with this then I have, which is next to none.

I'm about to write it off as I can't do anything. I was all excited waiting for the cable. Oh well, time for a new TV I guess?

Any help would be appreciated.

I recommend taking your question over to the Display Devices area, or maybe HTPC, rather than here in gaming. I think you are pretty close. Basically what your manual is telling you is that the HMDI port will not accept a "standard" computer signal, rather, it wants a "standard" TV signal, that is 1080i or 720p (or a couple of others). The resolution is not the only thing here. Things like vertical and horizontal timings and what not vary between computer and TV signals. That being said, you should be able to get your computer to output a TV signal with either your videocard software or a third party software like powerstrip. Like I said, try one of the other more frequently used forums and maybe do a search for powerstrip to do some reading in the mean time....don't return the cable yet. Good luck.
