I just picked up an IN72 projector and I have it paired with an $80.00 sony dvd player. The unit is non progressive scan so I'm sending a 408i signal via component. I seem to be losing details in dark scenes and I dont know if this is due to the projector limitations or the players limitations. Will a high end unit like the oppo or momitsu help in this area?

Have you tried a calibration disc? That's the first step with any new combination of grear.

Only the THX optimizer. Do the calibration disc help with shadow detail? I know they are good for colors and such. I guess I'll have to give it a go.

Bruce, your gamma (curve) setting on your projector will largely affect this too.

I suspect getting the black and white levels right is important to shadow details. I think THX optimizer is a good start. If you don't see grayscale improvement after using it then I'm not sure other discs will help.

THX is known to be less accurate than AVIA or DVE, so either of them is worth a try. Some DVD players and some displays have black crush problems, so you may be limited by your equipment. If a calibration DVD does not help, you could try upgrading your DVD player (it sounds like you have a pretty old one, and they have gotten much better over the years).

Thanks for the advice. I beleive the equipment I have is a large part of th problem. A freind of mine has a dvd player with hdmi so i think I will AB them just to see if that helps. I also think the hcg screen will make a difference when it comes in.
