i posted a while ago about the oppo dvd players, mainly the 981. i have a samsung lns2651d and am using my ps2 to play dvd's currently. is it worth while to upgrade to the 981? also do any stores other than amazon sell the 981?

You can get them from Oppo direct or a few other stores on the net, but Amazon seems to have as good a price as anyone.

The PS2 is a pretty lousy DVD player. Yes, you should see better PQ with the Oppo.

Have you considered the 970? You don't need 1080p which is a selling point of the 981.

yea i looked at the 971d but i dont have a dvi port of my samsung and i dont wanna use adapters. id rather have my hdmi cable and my optical for sound and thats it. aside from 1080p the 981 and 971 are the same right?

Right, but there is also the 970 with HDMI and 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i. $149 vs $229 for the 981.

By the way: the 971 comes with a DVI->HDMI cable. The model's not made anymore, but you can still get some from Oppo if you call.

the 981 has discrete on/off ir codes. I think that is advantage over the 971

the 971 is $199 from amazon or 981 for $229...ill just spend the extra $30
