My mom, who lives 250 miles away, called me last night to say that the DVD tray on her Sony DVD/Combo player won't open and it has a DVD from the library in it. The model number is slvd550p. The LED says open but nothing happens. Any suggestions short of something that will render the device permanently senseless but that would retrieve the hostage disc. Would appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks.

I would give it a good shake. If that fails, a screwdriver carefully applied will open the case without doing any damage. But it could be the thing is busted already.
I'll bet the library has an A/V guy.

Do you mean opening the whole case or gently prying open the tray?

Try unplugging the dvd player for 10 minutes and then try to see if it ejects,
And then if it won't open then try to open it and remove the disc.

I meant opening the whole case.
Or, as I suggested, getting the friendly library A/V guy to do it.
