View Full Version : Marquee HDM Problem?

First of all I've had this Marquee (8501) a little over 3 years and this is the first time I've tried to do a rough set-up before I mount this on the ceiling. The only thing I've done to this since I bought it was powering it up every now and then (approx 20 hours) making sure everything ran ok. I also got my LVPS filament voltage repaired by Tim Martin and got his fan mod done about 2 years ago.

BTW if anyone with a Marquee thinks there fans are too noisy, consider getting Tim's fan mod done, you'll be surprized.

Anyway, after the PJ was warmed up (~45 min) I started going through the different menus for a while then suddenly the text on the screen started bowing up and down (pulsing?). Approx 30 sec. latter the PJ shut itself down which I believe was that safety feature I read about here on the forum and Curts site.
When I looked at the back panel I did see the H fail light flashing so after power down I reseated the HDM and its daugther board. It appeared to solve the problem. I proceeded to do the guided tour (mechanical) until it came to the part to move the raster/grid to the center of the CRT, I couldn't move it horizontally but it would move vertically. This is on all 3 CRT's. Under the convergence menu on the first block that appears (center) no horizontal movement either but every other zone that comes up it moves and converges.

I remember seeing a post where Tim said replace Q501 on the daughter board and C50 of the HDM and it should fix 4 out of 5 HDM's....... Well this is the 1 out of 5 and it didn't fix the problem. Note I couldn't find a 105c (Hi temp) cap and use a +85c instead just to see if it would work.

I've cleaned practically every connector on this unit including the HVPS and still no luck. I'm not a electronics tech but work at a electronic mfg facility.

Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.

Hello

Thanks for the endorsement! Marquees provide static H Convergence (full frame) correction thru the HDM, yours may have a problem, e.mail me if you need an HDM to try.

Thanks Tim,
I'll email you when I get home.

Any other thoughts out there?

I had different problems with my 8500. The projector would sometimes blank out and give the H fail light. My projector was also ceiling mounted. What I did to correct it was to put some tape in the HDM top cover to wedge the HDM in the slot per Tim's suggestion. This seems to have been the solution for me.
While I was having the problem, one other thing that seemed to help was to reseat control board. It seemed to "reset" something in the board. Maybe you need to reseat the CLM.
Just a thought.

Thanks PaulWork,
I also did what you suggested with the HDM top cover and reseated the CLM several times including the daughter boards. I did notice what appears to be is a reset button behind the front panel of the CLM but, I didn't push it being I wasn't sure what it would do.

your problem most likely will be on:

-HDM
-CLM
-back heatsink assembly.

Deal with Tim on spare parts, or otherwise you can send those boards to me and I'll test them here in my 8500 test set.

Cheers!

Thanks Curt,
Tim is sending me a test module already so we'll see how that goes.
But for what it's worth, I feel that only you or Tim can help me debug this unit!

Thanks!
