View Full Version : HD1000U running Oppo 970 via HDMI - Why am I not impressed?

I've had my Mitsubishi HD1000U hooked up now for two weeks, and I am loving it so far. I'm completely satisfied with everything with the exception of the standard dvd's playing on my new Oppo 970 via HDMI (25ft).

I've watched a couple movies now, and the image seems to be crushing the whites and has a very digital look to it. Close up shots look great, and I think the color is close to where it needs to be, but mid to long shots look, like I said, digital.

At first, I thought this was due to the new projector and not having the bulb broken in just yet - I've only got about 15 hours on it so far. Then I put the same dvd's I viewed in to my xbox media center. Since it is modded, it acts as a upconverting player and outputs at 720p. I know this isn't the greatest upconverting player, but it actually looks better than the Oppo. The xbox is running through component (25ft). Through component, the colors seem to pop more and the image looks less harsh and more filmlike. I also run my 360 through component and use the HD-DVD add-on, and it is jaw-dropping.

Anyone else have this issue with the Oppo? I realize I need to further tweak and calibrate, but I guess I was expecting more from this player as it is regarded so highly in these very forums. Oh, and I do have it set to 720p.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Bill I get a more filmlike image with the component connection on my HD 1000 with both my DVD and HD sources. However the HDMI is sharp, sharp, sharp. Really looks good on Discovery HD and other well produced HD shot programs. This is why I ran both HDMI and Component to my HD 1000.

Do you think it's a matter of knocking the sharpness down? I currently have it set at 0. I'm sure it could stand to be focused a little better too, but I'm trying to see how others have coped with the sharpness.

Thanks again

The HD1000U might have other controls to consider adjusting. (especially anything that "enhances" the contrast and/or sharpness - ala TrueVivid (I think that's the clever name  ) on the HD70.)
But I would try dropping the Sharpness in case zero is not just an "off" (a passthrough) for the Sharpness. It might still be adding a ring.

Don't expect too much from SD DVD's. Even upscaled and played through a fine PJ like the Mits they just plain suck IMHO.

I think the point the OP was making is that the same dvd looks better from a different player over a different kind of cable.

Billbofet, I wonder if the culprit here is the hdmi cable?
I haven't watched many DVD's from my OPPO yet - that's going to change tonight.
I did watch The Departed last weekend and found that it had issues, I figure I haven't owned the Mits long enough yet to have ironed everything out.
I haven't even popped in a THX opt & gone over the grays. I'll do that tonight.

FYI I have HDMI from my cable box and from my OPPO both going to a Monoprice HDMI switch. Since hooking this up I have seen a couple times a rolling line either up or down the screen horizontially. That's the only bad thing I have found with that.

I may just run component from my DVR and HDMI from my OPPO and see if I like that better.

When I say adjusting I mean turning off.

And through a very good DVD player (some) SD can look quite good compared to how they look through an average dvd player.
My $35 Bravo D1 (upscaling to 720P) does a remarkable job. (BUT only through HDMI. It is an AWFUL anaolg player! I have other players for analog hookups)
I am waiting for the format wars to end before investing in HD or Blu.

That's odd.

I've found that if I play a DVD in XBMC, (upconverting to 480p, 720i, or 1080i) the video has horizontal lines through it. It's really noticeable when there's movement.

Guys, Thanks for the advise.

I ended up taking a couple hours to adjust the projector by using Digital Video Essentials. I ended up knocking the sharpness way down, brightness went down a smidge, contrast went down a bit, and I took the color up.

I also had my wife help me adjust the focus - I think this made the biggest impact.

I am now exptremely impressed with the pq and it is even better now than the xbox media center player. There is now significantly less noise and it appears much more film-like.

This is my first projector, but man, I love this thing. Why have I waited so long?

I'll be enjoying some HD-DVD's tonight and some 360 gaming. Here in Wisconsin, we are about to get about 15 or more inches of snow, so it's the perfect time to bond with my new toy.

I'm in South Dakota myself- no lack of snow and it just won't stop. But it's a good nite to be curled up in front of my PJ! :D When my new Mits is here I'm thinking of trying the Oppo myself.

Sounds like you fixed the PQ. I have an oppo player myself (DV-970HD). I am running it into a VP-30 scaler. If you don't have a scaler. They (OPPO), told me that I should use the (DV-981HD) because it does better video processing.

De-interlacing: DCDi by Faroudja , HD Up-converting / Scaling: by Genesis/Faroudja. Chipset: Gensis/Faroudja.

For External Video Processor or Scaler: They recommend the (DV-970HD). Because, it will do (480i/576i over HDMI output).

It generally seems to vary depending on source& cable type. My Motorola cable box looks best over component (vs hdmi), & my 360 looks best over th Monster component cables (vs VGA & regular component). I didnt try the PS3 with anything but hdmi, but The Departed & The Prestige were the best HD sources i have viewed so far (my opinion only!!!) , so itll stay hdmi.

try sharpness -5
brightness 15
contrast -15
the manual mentions the last 2 settings
someplace.

If the HD1000 is like the HC3000 regarding its sharpness setting via HDMI then the best setting is -2 , this maintains detail without added noise/ringing (-5 should end up being softer than it needs to be) .

Not sure if it applies to the HD1000 but thought I would toss it out there anyway ;) .
