I'm trying to work a deal between my Key Digital iSync PRO and Optoma HD73 so that an RGB signal can be sent over HDMI. Of course, sending component YPbPr works just fine.

Generally, when I switch the Optoma to the RGB color space - all I ever get is a very bright green screen - whether I'm sending component YPbPr, or presumably RGB over HDMI from the iSync.

Is anyone successfully using their Optoma in this mode - and if so - can you tell me what components you are using and if there was any trick to get it to work?

First I hadda Google 'Key Digital iSync Pro' to figure out what it is (it's a wonder they're not getting sued by Apple!), and then I hadda wait for the sun to go down (PJ time, heh!). Anyway:

If I set my Sony DVD player (DVP-N75H) to output RGB over HDMI, nothing happens. If I then switch the HD73 to RGB (both units now supposedly set to RGB), I get greens where there should be grays. If I then switch the DVD back to YPbPr, the color returns to normal, and if I then go back & check the 73, it has reset itself to YPbPr as well. So, no joy here either.

Can you tell me the potential advantage of using RGB (assuming we could get it to work)? Is it the native internal color space of your iSync perhaps? Would this be the case for DVD players as well?

My interest in the RGB issue was raised by this Cine4Home HD72i review (http://www.cine4home.com/reviews/projectors/OptomaHD72i/HD72TestReview.htm). I found section "3.10 Details / Scaling / Sharpness" interesting in light of my experience with the movie Cars - since there was significant stair-stepping with the main red car character (I can't remember his name).

If I sent a 480i signal to the Optoma, all looked well likely due to the Faroudja chip. But if I let the iSync PRO scale and convert to any other resolution (ie, 720p, 1080i, 1080p) and send the signal via HDMI, the reds showed stair-stepping on the edges of solid reds.

It raised my curiosity as to whether I could make an improvement to the image by sending RGB over HDMI - but no joy.

It would definitely be good to know if RGB would make a difference here.If I sent a 480i signal to the Optoma, all looked well likely due to the Faroudja chip. My Sony DVD player only outputs progressive over HDMI, rendering useless the Faroudja in the projector. The Sony's deinterlacing is actually pretty good, but I prefer the scaling of the Optoma. Plus, the Sony component output is terrible. All said, I think I'll be returning the Sony & getting an Oppo.It raised my curiosity as to whether I could make an improvement to the image by sending RGB over HDMI - but no joy.Now you've got me curious as well. I'll report back if I figure out anything else with this.
