View Full Version : anyone using ps2 on a projector?
I have an Optoma HD70 set up in the basement and was wondering if any of you guys have tried ps2 on a projector. Just wondering if it's worth buying the cables to try it out, or if the image will be so bad I'd be wasting my money.
Thanks

I had a PS2 hooked up to a Sanyo Z2 for 2 years (92" screen) and the graphics were pretty good. The 480p games (Burnout 2-4) were the best, but even 480i games looked OK to me. Heck, I played through Chrono Cross (PS1) on the PS2 via that hookup and my eyes didn't bleed!
William Mapstone 02-24-07, 09:06 PM I have had a PS2 hooked up to my front projector every since the PS2 launched. The image quality never bothered me, it seemed to upscale pretty well.
Poochie 02-24-07, 09:23 PM I've had the PS2 hooked up to my projector (Sony HS20 onto a 100" screen) since the day I got the projector. Definitely more fun that the 27" tube it replaced. I purchased the PS2 component cables for this endeavor - I only had to run those to my receiver since that does component switching, and the projector came with a "PJ multi" cable for running Svideo and component to it.

For the record, a ton of people in this forum used to really hate playing PS2 on a large HD screen - and I'm not talking about front projector but anything over 50". A lot of them went so far as to keep it on an older direct view CRT and/or opted for non-component connections to take some sharpness off the jaggies. At least 2-3 years ago this was the common theme in the gaming forum (which was all one forum) with a lot of people dealing with this issue as many were upgrading their displays.
Now obviously it's all about expectations and what you want to look at. Jaggies and other uglies really bother the heck out of some people and totally ruin any immersion. Others don't mind anything and just enjoy gaming in large format whether it's Atari 2600, NES or PS3 in 1080i/p. Probably helps to know which category you're more likely to fit into.
I don't post this to discourage you but getting 3 positive posts I don't want you to run out tomorrow expecting a sure thing. Thinking back, I've read a good number of posts from people who did not enjoy their PS2 on a large screen so your mileage may vary and it's good to keep expectations reasonable. That said, you can always return the cables if it doesn't work out.
crmsnidol 02-25-07, 12:45 AM I have my PS2 hooked up via component to a Sanyo Z4 shooting a 106" image. My 7 yr old daughter and her friends play DDR regularly on it and I play Guitar Hero and racing games. I love it and nobody complains about the "jaggies" that are far more obvious at this size than the 32" we used to play on.

i have a samsung 52inch lcd 1080p and i cannot stand playing ps2 games on it =(
i play it on my old front panel projection TV cause it just looks so much better
i have same projector, play ps2 on 92inch screen graphics good, nothing like need for speed on that size of screen dav...
Thanks for the responses guys, sounds like I just need to see for myself. I know that it won't be like HDTV or anything so my expectations aren't high but if it's watchable I think it would be pretty cool on the bigscreen. I guess there's nothing to lose but a few bucks, I saw the component cable on epay for $10-12 shipped. My receiver does component switching also, so maybe I'll just pull the toslink out of the stb to try it and if I like it all I need is a second optical cable. Maybe someday I'll have the cash for a ps3. The screenshots some of you have posted make me drool.
NoThru22 02-25-07, 07:43 PM I played through God of War and Onimusha 3 on my Infocus IN76 projector and had a blast.
mbagsh55 02-26-07, 11:25 PM I have my PS2 connected ONLY to my projector (an EPSON TW-600). :D
I initially tested the PS2 after I bought the projector and the jaggies and blur put me right off. After reading on this board from someone who was playing tourist trophy in 1080i thought I splurged on some decent cables and could not be happier.
I use a D4 cable (similar to component cables) and I find the image on a 100" screen very acceptable. I have tried to go back to a 21" TV and hated it. I now have the PS2 only on the projector and love playing TT in hi-def on the wall.
Component (or similar cables) are a requirement though, composite will look awful.
Cheers,
Marcus
