My nephew was able to get the DVD out of the player by shaking it but the DVD tray is definitely malfunctioning and unfortunately in today's repair by replace world, the player is probably not worth fixing.

My mom needs a new combo player. She has many VHS tapes that she wants to be able to play. Any recommendations on a combo DVD/VHS? Only need a DVD player not a recorder and upconvert is not necessary.

Thanks.

Any major brand would work. Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, etc.

Is a combo necessary? My dad had one that went south quickly as well. Wouldn't getting a stand-alone VCR and DVD player be about the same price, plus allow single component replacement.

Not a bad idea. Especially if the VCR on the combo player is still working.

Yeah, just grab a small one like an Insignia from BestBuy for >$30, or if you want a little higher end, a Phillips or Panasonic for around $40-$60. They'll be as good as anything you'll find in a ron-DVD-R combo unit.
