View Full Version : Can't component carry an HD signal?

I think it can, but I was looking into buying an Oppo up-converting DVD player to go with my X1 and, to my dismay, it says that it can only send 480i or p over component video (YPbPr, RGB, and the like).

Is it just an issue with Oppo DVD players, or something to do with the security encoding of the disc? If so, can I run DVI out of the DVD player and through the DVI-VGA dongle that came with my Mac? From there I would run VGA to the X1.

Alternatively, can someone recommend a good up-converting DVD player that CAN send a 720 or 1080 signal down component?

Thanks. :o

Legally (thanks to "Hollywood") they can't send the up-converted (720p/1080i) signals over the component outputs (theorectically then you could copy it) and sell their units in the US. However, the Oppo 970H (and many others) can be "hacked" to provide up-converted video over the component outputs.

However, the only real reason to use the up-converted DVD video with your X1 would be if the scaler in the X1 doesn't do a good job (remember, a lot of DVDs won't look any better at 720p/1080i than they do at 480i/p). With my HC3 PJ, there is very little difference between the PQ of a good (well mastered, high quality) 480p DVD and (example) Discovery HD Theater (at 720p/1080i - which I can do with my H20 satellite STB).

Note, my HC3 (960 x 540) doesn't have a DVI/HDMI input, and my Sony NS75H can't be hacked.

You can get firmware that enables upconversion on the component outputs for the Oppo 970. Don't worry, it's perfectly legal. :)

It just occurred to my that my DVD player (I brought it from my room when the one for the projector failed) doesn't have a deinterlacer! I am sure running 480p would be a vast improvement alone.

Perhaps I should just get a good progressive scan player and wait until Blu-Ray wins?

Yes, a progressive scan player will improve PQ, but an upscaling player like the Oppo will likely be even better. Waiting for BD to win will be a very long wait -- IMO, both formats will be around for many years to come, although waiting for a universal player (other than the current LG player) may make sense.

Oppo 970-hd + hacked firware = 720,1080i via component video cables.
I have the same setup going to my epson pj and the picture is breath taking near high-def...

I am wondering if the Faroudja FLI2200 in my X1 is not superior (or at least equal to) any up-scaling DVD player?

If I get one it will most surely be an Oppo, but I just wonder if it will make much of a difference?
