View Full Version : Final Fantasy XII looking ugly on PS3
grievous1 02-25-07, 12:10 PM Ok, I just got an HDTV (finally) and thought that this alleged 1.50 update would fix the jaggie problem. The only PS2 game I play at this point is Final Fantasy XII, and I must say, it looks like total ass. This crappy update did not fix a damn thing for me, and I'm disappointed as I refuse to play FFXII so that my eyes may bleed 5 minutes later. Is there any manual fix to this jaggie problem? I thought I remembered a fix on some website long ago before the update. Any help would be most appreciated, thanks. BTW I do use HDMI.
IeraseU 02-25-07, 12:19 PM firmware 1.50 fixed the deinterlacing problem so that PS2 games look the same on PS3 as they do on PS2. If you are not happy with how FFXII looks on PS3 after 1.5 firmware, then you just dont like how it looks at all (even on PS2).
There is a rumor that when software emulation hits PS3 (like is happening in the euro systems) that some enhancements to PS2 games will occur in the form of AA and upscaling to HD resolutions. There is a screen shot of FFXII supposedly running under this emulator in another thread.
michael000 02-25-07, 12:46 PM FFXII should look almost exactly the same on PS3 as it does a PS2, both will be very jaggy on an HDTV. It's just the way the game was made. It won't help with the jaggies but turn off the flicker filter in FFXII's options it'll help with clarity some.
grievous1 02-25-07, 12:47 PM You didn't get my original post, obviously. THIS UPDATE DOES NOT WORK. Period. Others are having the same problem, I know of this. When I had my PS3 hooked up to my old tv, the game looked wonderful. And based on screens of it playing on PS2, it looked great there. Now it looks like a bunch of horrible sprites. So yeah, I DID like how it looked, but now it looks like utter crap on the new HDTV. Anyone else out there who can actually contribute to this thread instead of thinking my post count determines my IQ?
EDIT: Thanks for the tip Michael but unfortunately this didn't work. I'll try to get a picture taken of this atrocity sometime soon to show everyone what I mean. When I played this on my old tv the jaggies where nowhere near what this is. It's like I'm playing a PS1 game *shudder*.

Try this IQ king, where in your original post did you ever say IT WORKED BEFORE AND LOOKED GREAT in your original post? C'mon show me w/out trying to edit it.
If you had then people would know that it's an issue of something possibly going wrong in the update and not just you expecting too much out of the update.
grievous1 02-25-07, 01:00 PM That post wasn't directed at you, lol.

This, is what it used to look like.
Now, this is the crap I get:

For some reason the photo doesn't do it justice though, because the jaggies move like crazy when the characters are just standing there.
Daniel L 02-25-07, 01:35 PM It's your new TV. PS2 games look better on my $80 Wal-mart special TV compared to my 1080p Sony.
vilmer_ 02-25-07, 01:57 PM Do you have widescreen mode checked off? The characters look rather bloated. Go into the Config options and do some tweaking, if you haven't already. FFXII looks fine on my HDTV, HDMI. Otherwise, the TV is fecking it up majorly.
jling84 02-25-07, 02:02 PM From your picture it also looks like you might not have the widescreen option turned on because everything looks stretched out.
From my own experience with FF12, it looked like total ass on my 1080p 52' HDTV when I played it with my PS2 through component cables; even the CG was heavily pixellated. However upon sticking FF12 into the PS3 I bought this week and hooking it up through HDMI, the picture does definitely look much better than when I was playing it on the PS2. So much so that I finally found it in me to sell my old PS2 on eBay. It still is slightly more pixellated than say if you played it on a CRT tv, but it is definitely much better than the picture you posted.
I'm sure you've noticed how SD tv channels look worse on your HDTV than they did back when you had a CRT tv right? FF12 looks worse for pretty much the same reason; because not only are they 640x480 signals, but 480i at that. I have no idea why SE decided to leave us early HDTV adopters out in the cold by leaving out a progressive scan option, since they always pride themselves on creating some of the most beautiful and technologically advanced games. If they had just included a progressive scan mode the game would be looking absolutely dazzling on your new screen (take a look at games like GT4 and God of War for examples of how big a difference a higher resolution or progressive scan can make).
If you change your settings to widescreen and it still looks as bad as in the picture, you may consider looking into getting another HDTV that has a better internal scaler. Also, you can hope that Sony decides to include software upscaling in a future update since they are beginning to take the software emulation approach for PS2 games. Hope that helps.

Well it followed mine so i assumed you were addressing both of us. I don't know what to say about your extreme jaggie problem cause i don't see it. Your first screenshot is a from a game engine cut scene (as opposed to the CG cutscenes like the opening) so of course it'll look a little smoother than normal. Posting an in game shot of what it looked like before would help alot more. Your second pic is an in game shot and it looks the same as FFXII has always looked to me except during the aforementioned cutscenes (CG and in game). For the record i have played through FFXII so i'm pretty familiar with it (played through it on my PS2 though and have only fooled around with it on my PS3).
The only thing that looks off to me is that you're running the game in 4:3 and you should change it to widescreen in the FFXII options menu.
any ps2 game will look like crap on an HDTV compared to an SDTV, even if you play on an actual PS2. the only possible exception would be GoW imo, but it will still look better on an SDTV.
jling84 02-25-07, 02:41 PM grevious1 have you tried playing the game with widescreen option off and changing your tv format to 4:3 to match (screen will have the two black sidebars) since you said you prefer 4:3 over widescreen.
Also does your tv have some sort of setting for video noise or like on my Mits there is a feature called "Film Mode". You can try playing around with those settings along with the sharpness to see if you can make it look better. I don't know if my two suggestions will help, but at this point I can't think of anything else.
I hope that helps, but if not just keep your CRT to play FF12 and hope Sony implements some system updates to improve PS2 games on HDTVs although I don't think they can really improve 480i games by leaps and bounds. BRING ON FF13 SE!
Those pics look awfully familiar.

I tried everything. Widescreen, 4:3, went into game config and changed stuff, everything. My tv unfortunately doesn't have any film mode or anything so I can't change much there. Maybe its just that the jaggies are so much more noticable now since it's on an HDTV. I guess I just have to grin and bear it at this point. Doesn't make much sense though - I try to make my games look better by getting a better tv, but they get the ugly stick instead, lol.
And yea, I can't wait for FFXIII. At least THAT will look good!

Listen kid go play on a SD TV then you will see that it looks good. ONCE AGIAN!
Any HDTV will make a SD game that is not 480p look decent on a HDTV. Since your HDTV might not render the best of image, it had nothing to do with the FIRMWARE UPDATE.
NOT A PS3 Issue at all!!!
GW-SMOkeY 02-25-07, 03:20 PM Well why dont you follow the advice, vs put something like this "THIS UPDATE DOES NOT WORK. Period. Others are having the same problem, I know of this. When I had my PS3 hooked up to my old tv, the game looked wonderful.
- Makes sense to me does it?
This seems like a recommendation for vid delay in fighting games, but it sounds like it'll also serve the purpose of improving ps2 image quality on LCDs:

wreckshop 02-25-07, 03:56 PM Grievous:
The "problem" is not your PS3, rather your new HDTV. any sd material on an HDTV will look far worse than it did on an SDTV.
i dont know how many people have told him its not hte ps3 its his new tv.
every hdtv makes ps2 games look like crap. EVERY SINGLE ONE. my 5,000$ LCD TV makes it look like crap AND my $500 one from staples.
they both equally look like crap. Sony doesn't have to "FIX" anything. Do you notice that your standard cable tv doesn't look as good on your LCD as it would on your old TV? same deal.
maybe your cable company should fix their service -_-. Please stop insulting people when the answer has been outlined to you mulitple times

PS2 looks great on my rear projection CRT, much better than my old 32" direct view TV.

sorry most people have digital HD tv's, not too many with rear projection CRT HD's (actually my friend has one, giant giant thing)
THIS is precisely why I spent several years with a 30" 1080i CRT, and still have it in the bedroom specifically for SD TV and PS2 (not that I'm playing PS2 now that I have a PS3, but I can if I want to, or DVDs)
Digital HDTVs are built for HD signals. I cannot tell you how many times I've heard people throw a fit about how 480i signals look terrible on their expensive LCD/plasma.
CRTs do a much better job with SD.
Megalith 02-25-07, 06:16 PM Seems to me that a lot of people simply have TVs with terrible scalers. There's no reason why a 480i game has to look like crap on an HDTV, especially games in 480p. Off the top of my head, FFXII, FFX-2, Shadow of the Colossus, and God of War all look great on my 1080p RPTV.
By the way, the latest update did NOT fix the problem, although I believe it has made the problem a little more bearable. The games still look better on the PSTwo, and strangely, sound better too.
alex2792 02-25-07, 06:39 PM FFXII just looks crappy on any big screen TV period, it's a jaggied mess I actually prefer playing it on my 26inch CRT with Svideo cable for less sharpness.

You got ripped off, my 1080p LCD (about $2.5k) makes SD look just fine, better than my old Sony Trinitron.
yeah my samsung ln 52inch 1080p is ****ing horrible. my bad.
*laugh*
i also didn't say SD looks like crap, i said Ps2 games do cause it stretches it according to my TV.
SD doesn't look as good as it does on my CRT, and that's expected.
next time you'd like to put words in my "online mouth" please re-read what i typed. Thx babygirl

Ditto for my 1080p mits 46231 lcd. I couldn't be happier.
Did the original post say how he was connected to his HDTV. Component, HDMI, Composite???
original poster is right. PS2 games still look like crap on the PS3. the lastest firmware helped a lot but it still doesnt look as good as playing on original PS2 hardware itself

Your TV is jacked up then. PS2 games look just like PS2 games on my PS3. I have a Sony HDTV that is about 3.5 years old.
It does 1080i\720p and 480p perfect.
I have firmware 1.51
supercomando 02-26-07, 12:21 PM Thats why I bought a new 27" Sony CRT SDTV using component cables to play PS2 games. Sure they have some jaggies but the games look pretty darn good on that Tv and when there is an widescreen PS game I play it on my 30" Sony CRT 910 and then they look better.
