View Full Version : Guitar Hero games on PS3
Goatspeed 02-25-07, 08:47 PM I love the guitar hero games. The wife won't go with me to Best Buy anymore as I just have to rock out. I figure I should buy them, but I'd like to check first to see if anyone else here runs Guitar Hero 1/2 on their PS3 and if everything works okay.
TwinTurboJosh 02-25-07, 08:52 PM Nyko has a Playstation2->USB controller adapter coming out that supposedly works with the GH guitar.
I would like to know how that's going to work since all PS2 games on the PS3 require the PS button to be pressed before playing. Only the PS3 controllers have the PS button.
DblHelix 02-25-07, 09:20 PM Take a look at some of the pics. It has a switch or button on the side that takes the place and works like the PS button.

Not bad, but Guitar Hero 2 is about to be released for the 360 and it's the best version yet. I'll save my money for that version.

Pretty sure R3 and L3 act the same as the PS button when in analog mode. That's how you get regular dual shocks to work on the PS3.
No analog mode or R3/L3 button on the guitar, so it wont work without an adapter. The adapter will simply put this button on the adapter or map some button combo to it.

hows that, troll?
The only reason I still have my PS2 right next to my PS3 is for Guitar Hero 2. Any idea when this adapter is coming out? I'm getting tired of constantly moving my AV cable and optical sound cable between the two consoles.

Interesting.

How does one become a troll when they own both systems? Since when is an opinion not as valid as anothers? If you don't know why the 360 version is superior to the PS2 version, you haven't been doing your homework, and because of that, you have just insert your foot in your own mouth.

How does GH2 coming out on XBOX360 have anything to do with GH on PS3? It's irrelevant to the thread, no matter how much you'd like to think to the contrary.

Very nice trolling. AST = epicbloodline? There are a few similarities heh. As it has already been stated, the XBOX 360 version coming out has nothing to do with playing it on PS3, so take it somewhere else.
As a side note, what I have in hopes for GH on PS3 is a version that allows for downloading new songs from the PS store. Maybe on a per song basis. How cool would that be? You get the game with songs already pre-loaded and you get the option to pay for/download extra songs if you'd like them.
I think the PS3 is the best system to allow for this option anyway.

Just curious why you think this. There has been no evidence so far to suggest such a statement, especially when another console has been selling additional game content online for over a year now.
Am I the only one here that owns all the major consoles? Some of you act like the PS3 is the only console on the market. I'm not quite sure why you get so defensive when someone mentions the 360. If a game is released on more than one system, I see no harm in comparing them. Why are some of you so sensitive? Inner child issues?
mvesledahl 02-26-07, 11:30 AM My GF plays the american idol with mics on the PS3 all the time. You can use the the PS button to start, and the mics work from there. I'm sure it's the same for the guitar...
There has been talk about SingStar releasing a Karoke game on PS3 that will offer song downloads from the PS site, the GH request is probably not out of the question.

This is supposed to be implemented in Sing Star for the PS3. I don't see why this wouldn't work for Guitar Heroes for the PS3, if/when it comes to the PS3.

Wasn't really sure how the 3 numbers 360 came to be some sort of taboo here. Is it illegal or unconstitutional to make a comparison of a game on more than one console?

More than likely because the topic of this discussion is on whether or not Guitar Heroes 1 and 2 work on a PS3 without any issues.
It was a technical question and not a question on opinions of ports.

Nope. Several folks/sites have tried to get the guitar working and no dice.

Well it was irrelevant to my original question. As such, you probably came across as a troll to some. If you want to compare the releases, great. We are discussing how to make GH work on a PS, not chatting about other console options.

As this isn't a site run by the government, the constitution really doesn't enter into it. And, since it was about Guitar Hero working on the PS3, what it does, or doesn't do, on the 360 is irrelevant. It could include virtual groupies, and it won't change the playability of GH, and GH2 on the PS3, now will it?
Pay more attention in class. Your Reading Comprehension and US Gov classes, especially.
Cysquatch 03-02-07, 12:28 PM I see the Nyko play adapter on the Nyko website but its not on their store yet. Anyone know when it will be available? This is currently the only option to get the guitar controllers to work on the PS3.
HeadRusch 03-02-07, 01:03 PM hows that, troll?
I'm guessing its because its got a bigger tracklist and is high def by default, troll.

Aaaaaannd, it still has **** all to do with GH connectivity to the PS3. Is reading comprehension really that difficult a concept?

360 = 74 tracks (assuming the same 64 tracks + 10 exclusive tracks as of Janurary probably more at release)
PS2 = 111 tracks ( 47, GH1 and 64, GH2).
Additional content will be made available via XBL for the 360 version. The 360 version has some catching up to do. Until then, the edge goes to PS2 IMO.
Visual clarity isn't a big issue to me with they type of game. Its all about the number of tracks available.
Now back to the ONLY option to play it on the PS3: When can I buy the NYKO PLAY ADAPTER?

Thanks for putting to rest this ridiculous argument vs that troll... If any of you see where we can pre-order this Nyko adapter on the internet, please letus know in this thread. Thanks..
The Xbox 360 version is mind rotting filth, just like all other Xbox games.

 You're weird.
Blitzzz 03-02-07, 04:30 PM Never played it but is it not possible to hook up guitar as second player controller? or just start the game with ps button then plug in the guitar after the game boots?

I don't think they make a guitar with a USB cable, just the PS1/2 proprietary design.
Kysersose 03-02-07, 08:47 PM Emotep has been suspended, carry on.
He's ignored far too many warnings.

HeadRusch 03-02-07, 09:01 PM Thx Kyser
killakaipo 03-03-07, 01:47 AM OK now back to the subject now I cant comment how GH 1 or 2 works on PS3 because I just play it at a friends house. But the 360 version does look like its worth waiting for because like someone already said its gonna be in high def and not to mention the included 5.1 Dolby digital support which is a huge plus for rockers with home theater surround sound systems!
If thats not enough to convince someone to wait for this version than you should feel good knowing that the live marketplace should supply you with a steady supply of new songs. It already has a lot available for download.
So since the PS3 version wont be coming out for awhile it looks like Ill be getting the 360 version this April.
Cysquatch 03-03-07, 11:38 AM The topic is GH on PS3. To play GH on PS3, you will need an adaptor. Nyko is making one such adapter. It has a switch that replicates the PS button and therefore will allow use of ALL PS2 controllers....Here's an email I received from the Nyko marketing dept yesterday......sucks the price jumped from 15 bones to possibly $29.99!
Thanks for your interest in Nyko’s Play Adaptor for PlayStation 3. The Play Adaptor will be hitting store shelves nationwide and the Nyko Online Store in Q2 of this year for a suggested retail price of $19.99 – $29.99. The device will be fully compatible with all PlayStation 2 controllers, steering wheels and guitar controllers for playing PlayStation 2 software on the PlayStation 3.
For more information on the Play Adaptor and other exciting Nyko products please sign up for our newsletter at www.nyko.com.

Anyone else find the jump from medium to hard too much? I got 5 stars reviews in about 2/3 of the songs on medium but I'm really struggling with hard. I can't even get past the first venue. I'm such a loser. Feel like selling the game. OTOH, I could just stick to medium and work on showmanship :)
Oh....do you guys strum up and down? I got so used to strumming just down that now I can't keep up on the hard level. That part I'm sure just takes more practice but i find it hard to switch from one chord to another which I don't think I can overcome. I don't play guitar for real.

You are holding the "button" between your thumb and pointer finger, right? Up-down-up-down-etc strumming should come naturally. Well, it does for me anyway. Oh BTW I've been playing guitar for over 15 years. YMMV.
Hmmm, I was just thinking maybe for a non-guitarist it would be better to get the rhythm down first. Work on your right hand technique first, master it, and then move onto fretting hand and combine the two. Learning both at the same time might be too much for some people, I imagine.
henningh 03-05-07, 02:13 PM Frequency is one of two games (the other being Amplitude) that came before Guitar Hero and used a similar mode of play whereby you had to time button presses just right in order to hit a note. I mention Frequency because it uses the controller only and thus you should be able to get the full Frequency experience on the PS3.
I say "should" because in reality you don't. I played Frequency on my PS3 and found myself missing most notes in a simple song, where previously (on my PS2) I would hit most. I finally figured it out - lag! If I tried to hit every note on the leading edge of the note instead of in the middle, then my score increased drastically. This means that somewhere in the pipeline, I get a lot of lag on my PS3 when I didn't get any such lag on the PS2.
It could be several things. I was using my PS3's HDMI output, so I guess it could be:
1) PS3-induced lag to convert the signal to HDMI.
2) My television introduced the lag, because it had to process HDMI instead of component (like on my PS2).
3) The wireless controller was somehow responsible.
Anything else?
I play PS3 games just fine. As a matter of fact, I play other PS2 games just fine as well. But no games that I play have quite the same exact timing requirements that Frequency does.
Any thoughts? Tonight I'll try playing Guitar Hero using the SIXAXIS to see how that works wrt lag.

There was a couple long threads about lag and HD gaming, one in particular about the PS3 in backcompat mode. Do a search and I'm sure some interesting reading will pop up.
One thing I remember from one thread was about Guitar Hero 2's lag-checking feature in the options menu. I tested it on my HDTV: using a PS2 with s-video it reported no lag... using the PS3 with HDMI & sixaxis it reported lag of around 40ms!

Still hasn't been fixed. The lag is two frames, and comes from the PS3 itself. You can fix it by either using Composite/S-Video instead of HDMI, or by using Component cables and disabling "480p" under the PS3 video options.
Also, note that if the PS2 game has native 480p support, you may enable that to play lag-free through HDMI. The lag only occurs when the PS3 itself does the 480i -> 480p conversion.
logicalnoise 03-05-07, 05:28 PM sadly as far rhythm games on ps2 go only guitar hjero 2 supports 480p
