I have a Denon DVD1600 player which I really love. I'm using it as 480p via component cables to my Toshiba 50HDX82 rear projection. The picture is great, but I'm wondering if I should upgrade to an upconversion player such as Oppo 971, etc and my tv has DVI-D connection on the back as well as component (no HDMI). Will I see a difference in my dvd collection? I think my tv natually upconverts 480 signal to 540p automatically but I'm wondering if upscaling dvd player will show any video improvements?

Your Denon gets a very good score and review as a progressive scan player here: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=all&type=&manufacturer=15&maxprice=0&deInt=0&mpeg=0
Component vs HDMI/DVI: this is probably not a big factor. Depending on the combination of gear, some people like one connection over the other, but they should be pretty close in quality.
I don't know if scaling in the player vs the display will make a big difference for you. I think your Toshiba will accept 720p? If you want to try one of the Oppos, they have a 30-day return.
