On the new ATSC DVD recorders (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=791417) coming out, will the recorded HD content off the air (from what I understand it can only be recorded in 480i) be better than the s-video recorded directv off my dvr when the recorded DVD is played back? I understand that there may be upconverted signal upon playback from the DVD but is this better than s-video output from the directv dvr?

Won't know till someone tries it. And like everything else it depends on viewer's eyes.

I should read that other thread because my view may already be covered there.
Just because it has an ATSC tuner doesn't mean a DVD recorder will be able to tune HD channels. I doubt they will.
Quite a few people here already record HD programming that's been down-converted to 480i prior to leaving their STB through their DVD Recorders line input. They report excellent results - better quality than recording any native SD channel.
So I would imagine that at best, results would be similar. But only because the original source material was captured with an HD camera, and not as a direct result, but an indirect result of the ATSC tuner.

If it has an ATSC tuner it will automatically be able to tune to any digital OTA ch (HD or SD). What the output of the tuner will be, that's another matter.....
But to the OP - the PQ should be equivalent to commercial DVDs.

Doesn't answer your question, but I found that interesting.

I (& family and friends) can confirm what biker19 said ...
... the PQ should be equivalent to commercial DVDs.
My Cable Service = Comcast Limited Basic, and I use ...
1) RJTech RJ-1000ATSC HDTV w/QAM Tuner box (new / 1-31-07) > S-Video @ 480i
... and ...
2) Samsung DVD-VR330 (refurb) > Component @ 480p
.... a) Display Toshiba 62HM196 @ 1080p
... and I'm extremely satisfied with this combination ($173 total w/SH).
Recording on my Imation DVD-RW discs fullfills my expectation to see clear & detailed HDTV 16x9 widescreen recordings of our favorite shows (CH. 5-1 - NCIS, The Unit, CSI-Las Vegas, Numb3rs, etc.) , especially @ the SP recorded speeds which looks near HD PQ @ 11' distances vs. the analog 4x3 video signal TV broadcast (compared vs. Samsung VR330 analog tuner).
Like the upconverted SD DVDs (Toshiba HD-A1), the upconverted ( RJTech & Samsung VR330 > Component 480p) HDTV video signal is up scaled very nicely by my Toshiba 62HM196. At times, my wife and friends think that we're watching live HD TV broadcast. :D
So, the future DVRs that include an ATSC / QAM tuners will look great via DVD or Hard Drive! Meanwhile, my combo will do for a few years!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the information and data.
Phil, so if I understand correctly you are recording from the RJTech tuner box to s-vido input on the Samsung DVD-VR330? And then playing back from the DVD recorder over component upconvert to your Toshiba DLP HDTV?

Yep! My Samsung VR330 DVD recorder can Output the following resolution via Component ...
480i
or
480p
... and after viewing both options, ... my recorded DVDs (+R & -RW) & VHS PQ looked better using 480p with my Toshiba 62HM196.
