So I got my $20 worth of junk off ebay. At higher resolutions she works ok and gives a pretty nice quality image but it seems to have a noise problem. If I try to feed 800x600 60hz through it I get a crazy wiggling picture where everything looks like a snake slithering toward the ceiling.
I guess I know why it was so cheap now...
I tried grounding it to the sources and pj, and running all things off the same power and that helped but didn't come close to fixing it. I guess it's not a ground loop problem.
My next guess is to recap the power supply. Is there anything else I should check before I tear it apart? I already tried all inputs and set the switches to both auto select and manual separate sync and there doesn't seem to be anything else I can think of other than power supply problems with it.
Anyone else ever have this trouble with one?

Ohhh. Don't put so much work into an Extron, they are all reputation, not performance(from what I've seen on my screen anyway....). I've had quite a few Extron components before I wised up and changed to Altinex. Extron's are noisy, noisy, noisy. Maybe they have super high bandwidth capabilities(spec wise...) but the high frequency ringing, and video noise I've seen is unbearable.
My Altinex stuff, on the other hand, makes a very clean, clean image
I agree. I gave up on that extron junk a few years ago. It just seemed impossible to get a clean image from them without a lot of ringing showing up.

Can I get a comparable altinex switcher off ebay with ir and rs232 control and even half the other features this has for 20 bucks?
I agree I've had trouble with extron before, and always had better results without the silly interface/amp boxes but this is a 10 way switcher with a lot of capabilities that really cost next to nothing. I can't loose anything trying to fix it now that I've already bought it and paid shipping to get it here.
It seems to give a great pic except it's passing noise at one very specific frequency. It's a big difference from trying to fix a rgb109 interface or something.
I'll just give it a shot I guess, cant be more than a few caps on the power supply anyway.
I don't have money to just throw it away and buy something else right now.

I'm fairly sure the System 10 doesn't have IR control built in...
Altinex makes a 8x4 matrix switcher with RS232 control and MUCH better build quality that I've seen as low as $30. BIN(but it sold lightning fast...).
Good luck fixing it, and if you don't get good results, just throw it back on ebay, make some money on it, and use the profits to get a nice Altinex product...
Don't you like the NEC ISS's ? For convenience features, they can't be beat...

Ir is an option I think, and this one seems to have it. I can see the receiver in the ir window but haven't looked for the ir chip inside yet.
I was looking for a NEC switcher but they attract a few bidders and I can't afford what they sell for right now even though they can be dirt cheap too. There has been a low buy it now ISS on there, but shipping is too much. (it's overseas)
Next time any high quality matrix switcher comes up for $30 or less it's mine!!! I'm watching, that would be ideal.
Oh a whim I decided to try another set of rgbhv cables and bingo... It turns out the cable set I had grabbed to test is total crap. They had screw on ends and were just screwed on the outer insulator of the cable and didn't have ANY of the shielding grounded inside at all.
DOH!
