SJK 02-26-07, 09:12 AM Then we won't have to worry about our bulbs burning out.;) ryaneverett 02-26-07, 09:44 AM IIRC, these would also eliminate the color wheel, which is the major drawback to DLP. Nick Smith 02-26-07, 09:48 AM They would also significantly reduce the heat, which would in turn reduce the need for noisy fans. fs123 02-26-07, 11:06 AM There are many positives to going LED, but the economic reality is the manufactures probably make a good percentage of their profits from selling replacement lamps so they are really in no rush to shoot themselves in the foot and go led. I figure its similar to how the the printer guys make their profits from selling the replacement cartridges not the actual printer. DB2 02-26-07, 11:12 AM ...the economic reality is the manufactures probably make a good percentage of their profits from selling replacement lamps... I would strongly disagree with that. At this point in the technology (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) LED is not bright enough for front projectors. There are a couple of palm sized business projectors using LED but they're rated at something like 100 lumens and only recommended for small image sizes. mcavity 02-26-07, 11:18 AM there are are a couple of small ultraportable led projectors one is about 1 pound and the other is about 3 pounds. they are cheap too. however I think the current problem is they are very dim so cant throw a very large image. the boxlight BumbleBee is 1 pound 800x600 and 150 lumen. [thats 1 5 0 not a typo] mitsubishi pk-20 has 25 lumens with a 1000x1 contrast ratio darkhorror 02-26-07, 11:33 AM You wouldn't need the same rated brightness as a bulb projector would you? Seems that a LED doesn't lose brightness even close to as quick as a bulb we are using now. Anyone have some data on how quick they both lose brightness? Then we can see where a 150 lumen LED projector would compare to a brighter Bulb after like 200 hours. I am hoping that quality led projectors will be out in 2 or 3 years as I would like to upgrade from my HD1000u to a quality none bulb projector in 3+years. 1080p, blacker blacks and great contrast Wolfie 03-05-07, 10:50 AM Light Emitting Diodes can be expanded to any brightness conceivable with the technology at hand. They just need to be developed. I'm willing to wait another couple o' years to have the ultimate in front pj quality and longevity. Who needs expensive 3-chip DLP's anyway? Wolfie locknar 03-05-07, 12:56 PM whats really ironic is the first all-in-one (as opposed to a flat panel which used an overhead projector for a light source) PJ we sold was in 1992 made by Kodak and it was LED, but it was very dim, and the screen door effect was so large each pixel on 100" diag was 2"--good times victor-eyd 03-05-07, 07:33 PM Click to see video http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=2902895&sku=M24-4071&CMP=EMC-TIGEREMAIL&SRCCODE=WEM1308IP Very promising for a 1st gen pj.
