I'm using the component outputs on an Nvidia card to drive an older CRT HD set. 90% of the time, I use the HD480i, but sometimes I'd like to use the HD1080i setting.
$ grep HD480i /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Option "TVStandard" "HD480i"
$
Is there any way I can switch to HD1080i on the fly w/o restarting X?
xrandr won't work in this case.

Anyone have any ideas on this... I have the exact same issue...somehow need to switch between HD1080i and HD480i. Thanks!
Unfortunately, I never found a solution to this and it's likely that there isn't one. Now I have two PC's connected to my TV! The wife loves that. ;-)

Have you tried nvidia-settings? It should be able to do it without restarting x.

The interactive version of nvidia-settings seems to be a bit lacking when a TVStandard is specified. Pretty much everything is locked down. Can't find anything on man page....if you've got any pointers I'm all ears.

LOL, can see that being a hard sell!
I'm currently thinking of picking up an Audio Authority 9a60:

And doing what this guy did: http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/mythhd.php
His xorg.conf: http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/xorg.conf-HD.txt
That looks like it might work, given that it doesn't use the TV-out on the NVidia card and thus is free from these constraints that seem to be imposed when the HD480i / HD1080i settings are enabled.
Hooray...the MythTV is getting MORE expensive. Maybe I'll feel better when I call Comcast to cancel tomorrow.
Hah. I have tried that too. I now have an 9a60 collecting dust. I couldn't get it to pass 480i.
