View Full Version : Cheapest 7.1 PCM HDMI receiver for PS3?
fanerman 02-26-07, 01:43 PM My brother needs a new receiver but he has a very limited budget, only $400.
Is there any receiver out there that accepts 7.1 HDMI and can be had for $400?
It doesn't have to do any processing to the digital PCM signal, just has to be able to take in 7.1.
The Onkyo 604 looks like the best choice I've found so far, but it only accepts 5.1 PCM through HDMI.
Thanks for the help.
donricouga 02-26-07, 03:30 PM I think the closest you'll get is with the Pioneer Elite VSX-81TXV or the Denon AVR-2307CI which you can get from some unauthorized dealers for around $600. I can't think of any others that are that cheap that take 7.1 PCM over HDMI.
If you only want to spend $400, i think you will have to either A) use 7 analog outs(Not possible on the Ps3) or B) go with 5.1 PCM
ppshooky 02-26-07, 03:45 PM I bought my receiver from this site:
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/category/desc/21
Vanns.com doesn't charge shipping or tax, I believe.
I went with the JVC RX-D702b because of the slim profile (I only had 5.5" on my media stand for a receiver, and most were over 6"). Price was $560+.
There are several that are 7.1 channel without HDMI for under $400. But not many that are 7.1 with HDMI.
I would suggest your brother save some more so that more options are available to him.

A model lower than mine. Has 7.1 channel, 2 HDMI inputs, and 110 watts per channel. Costs about $380.

Harmon Kardon, 7.1, 2 HDMI inputs, 50 watts per channel, $390.

Sony, 7.1, 2 HDMI inputs, 110 watts per channel, $300 (I have no idea why this is so much cheaper)
i didn't think there was hardly any source material that even had pcm 7.1. i'd just with something that supports 5.1 if he really wants something now. otherwise i'd wait about a year till we some inexpensive hdmi 1.3 receivers that do 7.1.

Yours is 5.1 LPCM.
DaGamePimp 02-26-07, 04:19 PM I just scored a Denon 887 (which does 7.1 LPCM over HDMI) for a little over that $400 budget from Circuit City . It was a brand new open box unit , not even any dust on it . I know others have mentioned finding this receiver for around $400 so search around locally and see what happens ;) . I don't think anything else at this price point will directly compete with the Denon 887 ( at least I could not find anything else around $400 that does 7.1 LPCM ) , assuming you can find a deal of course as the MSRP is still $700 .

Oops. I guess I glossed over the PCM parts of the original topic.

I have the Onkyo 604 and I am pretty sure it accepts 7.1 PCM, it accepted The Decent's 6.1 PCM and the back channel scared the living sh*t out of me :)

I am going to wait for a low end receiver that lets you do some more processing on PLII, etc over HDMI. I don't think that's too far off now.

This actually seems like a nice unit.
While it doesn't upconvert all signals to HDMI, it will convert all inputs to HDMI - Allowing one wire connection (other than the power plug) to the tv.
Not a bad price either.

People have been finding the JVC RX-D702b for 400 and under online and other places (I scored an open-box one at Best Buy).
I finally picked up 2 new speakers and am gonna try out the 7.1 later this week! Maybe I'll go pick up Resistance for the true 7.1 experience.

I got mine back in November, I believe. A lot of people recommended Vanns to me for a good deal. I looked at other places online, but it seemed like, at the time I was searching, the price was about the same from various locations.

As far as I remember, the only difference between this one and the RX-D702b was the amount per channel and useless USB wireless functionality.
LordofDoubleD 02-27-07, 07:11 PM I have the JVC RX-402B and it is great - no USB wireless functionality - which I didn't need. Check it out.

Is there any receiver out there that accepts 7.1 HDMI and can be had for $400?There are a few that you might be able to get open box at that price but if your brother can wait a month or two the new Sony AV receivers (http://news.sel.sony.com/en/press_room/consumer/home_audio_video/home_theater/release/28268.html) might be a good choice. The 7.1 channel AV receiver is $500 MSRP and the 6.1 channel AV receivers are $400 and $300 MSRP. Wouldn't recommend the 6.1 channel $200 MSRP model since it is only pass through for HDMI. In other words it won't process the audio signal and it basically just an HDMI switch.

Sony, 7.1, 2 HDMI inputs, 110 watts per channel, $300 (I have no idea why this is so much cheaper)That AV receiver is only pass through for HDMI.

Cheapest one I believe is one of the Onkyo's. You can get it for less than 400 online (ebay and stuff) last time I searched.
SonyHome 03-02-07, 11:39 AM Is there any Sony ES line receivers with HDMI 1.3 and upscaling to 1080p?
