I am a tech for event services at my college, and I have recently been given the job of choosing a 5.1 system for a public area with a 46" LCD screen. At first my boss told me I had no limit to the budget...but I knew that he had no idea what I had in mind. I looked around and picked out an Infinity system and an SVS system to show him. Then he told me that I should try to stay uner $500 for the entire package. How dissappointing. I think that the area requires at least a 10" sub, but they don't want nearby offices to be bothered, and I need to keep the budget down, so I am considering 8" subs. Does anyone have any recommendations for a low cost small subwoofer? I am looking at the Infinity PS-8 and the PolkSW10. I know there must be some brand that I'm overlooking. Thanks for any help you can offer.

HSU STF-1 for $249, if they still have it in stock. FWIW, it is the least expensive sub I would ever purchase or recommend. But I haven't heard the Bic H100.

And driver size has nothing to do with volume level. Whatever sub you buy, just calibrate it to a level that won't bleed into surrounding rooms.

The BIC H-100 comes up in almost every single one of them - a 12" sub for $230 shipped (ebay).
BTW you can always lower down the volume.

They're $240 shipped now.

I tried several times yesterday to get an accepted offer at $200 plus $29 shipping and repeatedly received a message that lowest is now $239 shipped.

I ordered one anyway as it is still a great deal for my HT and will match well with the Velodyne CHT speakers.

Looks like the demand is picking up.
The deal is still very good though.

Take a look at the HSU VT-12 5.0 package for $299 with the STF-1 for $249. Add shipping and you come in just under $600. A little over budget, but I don't think you will be able to get much for $500.
