I need (or I would like) a black up converting DVD player. I need a player that can up-convert via component video. I would prefer to get one that either works or had a firmware hack. I do not want one that I have to "hack" every time I want to watch a DVD.

Now, I know that the only reason one should get a up-converting DVD player is if the scaler in the TV does not handle 480p video well.

I will be using this player with a TH-50PH9UK. I do not know if I will get a increase in performance if I use an external scaler or use the one build into the TV.

Thanks.

That model sounds like a Panasonic plasma. I have a number of choice for deinterlacing and scaling outside my Panasonic plasma, and none of them visibly improve my picture. My plasma is only 37" though.

I have a Cambridge Audio DVD89 DVD player. It is available in either in black or silver. The player also has DVI and HDMI outputs along with component output. It upconverts from all three outputs. On HDCP disks, it will not display upconverted through the component out, but if the disk protection is turned off it is fine. I just downloaded the firmware upgrade from Cambridge Audio on their website and installed it. The player is region free and has a great picture. 480i 480P, 720P and 1080i are available in the component mode. I have not checked 480i in DVI or HDMI modes, but 480p, 720p and 1080i work just fine. You do not need the firmware upgrade if the player is made after Oct. 2006 ( check website under support for DVD89 player for exact serial number cutoff). I have been very happy with this unit.

If you can't upconvert copy-protected DVDs via component then why bother upconverting via component at all? Who wants to rip and burn all these rental DVDs just to play on the Cambridge? Not me.

If he wants upconverted component AND black player, he is limited to Bravo D1 which is extinct, Samsung HD950 (remote codes hack needed to do component for all tittles), or Helios H4000 HD which has suspect durability.

Oppo 970HD, Bravo D2, LG-DVB-418, Zenith DVB-318, Samsung HD841/850/941, Momitsu v88x(n), etc. are all silver in color but can do component upconversion for all movies (some hacks may be needed for some players)--may be spray paint a silver one black? :D

Other black players upconvert via HDMI/DVI only.
