I see on some of the DVD recorder / players that they have capability for Divx playback in MPEG4 from according to the Divx wiki is in 1280x720 which should be 720p.

So if I record on my pc a dvd with divx in that format it should playback over component hi def (at least up to 720p). Has anyone have any experience and success in playing back some quasi hi def quality tv in this manner?

You can't get HD material out of an SD process - the player/recorder may upconvert the signal to 720P but the material it's upconverting is not HD.

I have a dvp5960 and its max is 720x480, maybe 720x576 PAL.
The OPPO and Toshiba have same limit.
I am looking for a new way to play 720 and 1080 divx from my PC.

Long shot, but have you thought about a HD DVD or BR player?
The HDTV guys can record HD to a standard DVD, which is playable only on HD DVD or BR players. You could give it a try? Are you saying that your computer will play these 720 or 1080 DVD's? or are the files just on a HDD in your computer?

Need DIVX Decorder chip in the HD or Blue Ray.
There is a Hi Def Divx player linkplayer2 but at $300, I might as well build a cheap HTPC.

Case+PSU $50
Board $75
CPU $125
2GB Ram $50
250gb HD $70
DVD ROM $30

But what if the dvd isn't a "dvd" formatted disc, i.e., no video_ts/audio_ts, and you just create a divx encoded mpeg file? Wouldn't the dvd player (that has divx capability, that is) play that digital file in it's native 720p resolution?

If it is hd mpeg-4 playback you are looking for, the droid you are seeking is known as the ps3! :D

Well, yeah, if I want to spend $400 on a player. My point is that already have a divx compatible DVD recorder/player and a HD capable tv tuner card for my pc.

I just need to play with it, and as of right now, I don't have the time. (I'm busy "working" at my computer, anyway, so I can check a message board 1 or2 times a day).
