Lets say I'm in the TV Guide menu and I go through this weeks list and I'm clicking on (REC) to record the programs I want. By default, the record mode is SP. I want it in LP (or sometimes EP), so I will have to go a sequence of keys after hitting (REC) to change the record mode everytime I select a program to record: (submenu)->(downArrow)->(downArrow)->(downArrow)->(EditProgram)->(upArrow)->(upArrow)->(rightArrow)->(rightArrow). Now the Record mode is in LP and I have to press a couple of keys to get back out.

Imagine me doing this for 15 programs I wanted to record for the next week or so. This is driving me nuts!

Is there anyway to change the default recording mode from SP to LP or EP?

Thanks in advance,
Gary

If the EH-55 acts like my E-500, then when the recorder is on, the display should show the amount of recording time remaining on the HDD, in the default mode.

The way I changed the default mode was to press the record mode button on the remote until SP showed on the display. After that, SP was the default recording mode.

See if that works on your recorder. Pg. 24 of the manual seems to indicate that it will work.

Go into the functions menu, under set up, and you can set the default recording quality. Here is the link to your manual.

Yes I know, but I'm talking about selecting a program for recording in the tv guide menu. You can change the mode while you are recording (like you mention), but when I'm scheduling a recording this is not possible.

I tried that too, but it won't change the defaults when you schedule a recording in the TV guide menu. Try it and then look at your recording mode by hitting submenu-> Edit Program. If your record is like mine, it will say "SP" under the record mode.

I have an EH55. I've changed my default recording mode easily by doing the following:

Press TV Guide
Go to the Setup choice in the top line menu
Press Enter
Go down to Change Default Options
Press Enter
Go down to Record Defaults
Press Enter

A box will show up at the left of the screen titled Record Defaults.
In there you can change the disc (hdd or dvd) the record speed, etc.

Yep, there it is on page 35 of the manual. Good catch. It works differently on my E-500.

You can use the remote to set the record speed on the EH55 as well, just like on the E500 as you mentioned.

What the EH55 lets you also do is set which drive is the default which I don't believe can be done on the older models. You can also set the default to start/end recordings by a minute or more, which can be helpful as well.

That worked!! Thanks! It's been right under my nose for some time! That was one
of the major things that bothered me and I'm glad I know how to change it now thanks to you.
Thanks Breyean!

I can't do this on my E-500. The TVGOS on the E-500 is an older version than the one on the EH-55. I guess they improved it by adding some functionality.

I also have an E500 which I still use as my main unit. The TVGOS is indeed a different version on the EH55. Some notable differences - there are no ads on the EH55; the EH55 picks up at least one station (TBSw) which the E500 doesn't (I just get a east coast TBS on it so it's off by a couple of hours); the EH55 includes a Keyword search function, which is quite helpful. I use that often if I'm looking for things like track meets, marathons, triathlons, road races. I can input all those terms into the search function, not knowing what exactly it will be called by the station airing it at 2am, and just check periodically to see if anything hits.
