i am wondering if it is possible to convert from hdmi down to vga using inexpensive adapters? i figured i could convert the hdmi connector to a dvi connector and then down to vga.

i've always wondered how it is even possible to convert from dvi to vga....because my understanding is that dvi is digital...where vga is an analog signal.

the scenario is...at work we are looking for a very inexpensive way to play dvd video on some 17" lcd panels that we have....

i figured we could get some cheap hdmi dvd players and then convert the hdmi output to vga....

i could be way off on this....any help would be great!

thanks guys

DVI-I allows for an analog signal to be passed thru it. So a cable adaptor is all that's needed for VGA. Not so for HDMI. You'll need a "box" that converts the digital to analog. They exist, but are probably not cost effective for what you want to do. Also, unless your DVD players output PC resolutions, there's a good chance the LCDs don't accept HDTV resolutions and it wouldn't work anyway.

Yes, this is what I was worried about...

So... DVI-I passes an analog signal...which would make sense as to why you can easily convert DVI-I to VGA...

does the same hold true for DVI-D?

i am wondering what would be our best approach to this...

actually....i guess it would be easier to convert from component to VGA...wouldn't it?

DVI-I (I = integrated) supports digital and analog video. Very few DVD players suppored analog output via DVI. DVI was created for PC -> monitor use and this is why analog was thrown it. Video cards have to do both. DVD-D is digital only. Component to VGA should work fine. Don't forget about the possible resolution mismatches.

As long as your LCDs accept 480p you should be ok.
