View Full Version : Help selecting entry level sub - Onix X-Sub?
Hi all,
I'm almost complete on choosing the components for my new HT equipment! So far here's the list:
Onkyo TX-SR604 Receiver
Onkyo DV-SR404
Infinity Primus 250 (x2)
Infinity Primus 150 (x2)
Infinity C25
However what I'm missing now is a subwoofer. Well, this isn't exactly true. I was going to purchase the BIC H100. However a few things turned me off.
1. Size. It's freakin' huge! It would be really hard to place it in my HT room (not dedicated HT; also Office and Rec Room).
2. No returns. I don't like being locked in. I never heard the sub before, so if I don't like the sound, I'm now stuck with the sub to try and sell it. Pretty inconvenient if you ask me.
I'm more concerned with #1 rather than #2 as I spent hours trying to figure out where I'd put it, and while I came up with a place, it's not really practical.
So I did some research and found that the Onix X-Sub is a poular guy around here too. The positives:
1. Size. Much smaller footprint = GOOD!
2. You can return the sub within 30 days if you don't like it. I also heard AV123's support is fantastic and you don't have to buy it from ebay.
However, I'm concerned about performance or SQ. I'm now going from a 12" sub to a 8" sub. Will I notice a difference? Is the BIS that much better than the X-Sub? Or do you think I'd be happy with the X-Sub?
Just keep in mind that my room size is 23' L x 16' W.
Thank you in advance!
bgillyjcu 02-27-07, 10:21 AM I think the X-sub is on backorder..... http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=810331
If you want SMALL and GOOD....its going to cost you a little bit of cash. Consider it an investment for the future....

SVS SB-12+ VERY SMALL (14"high x 14"wide x 15deep) and has some good reviews and comments around here. It will cost you $699 though..

The HSU STF-2 is pretty small... (19(h)/14(w)/18(d)) and Only $319
also

The HSU VTF-2.2 is the same size(19(h)/14(w)/18(d))....a nicer sub too for $399...
Thanks for your post!
I don't mind that the X-Sub is on Backorder. I can wait :).
Unfortunately the subs you mentioned in your post, with the exception of th SB-12+ are practically the same size as the BIC H-100. My budget is around $200-$300. While it's not going to get me the best, it should be a hell of a lot better than my HTiB Zenith sub :).
I'm just wondering if the X-Sub is a good sub as it's foot print is ideal. Or is the BIC H-100 better?
Take a look at the Hsu STF 1 or the Outlaw Audio LFM 2. They both are in the same catigory as the x-sub.
bgillyjcu 02-27-07, 12:05 PM X-sub has some good reviews around....for the price it is an amazing little value. Even made craigsubs rankings with respectable results!!!!
If you don't mind the wait, I'd say go for it :D
The Outlaw LFM-2 looks good too, but $100 more than the X-sub...
I'd go X-sub in that case since they are so similar in every single way...
Wid,
Same category as in footprint or as in quality? Is there something bad about the X-Sub? Like I said, I don't mind waiting at all. If the sub is good, then I'll snag it. The only reason I wouldn't purchase it is if it was poor in comparison to the BIC H-100.
Thanks again,
In all areas. That said my son has the x-sub and it is a great little sub for the money an size. If you don't mind the wait the x-sub is one hellofa deal imo.
adamanteus 02-27-07, 01:33 PM the x-sub is your best bet. they will be back in stock next week. i got one before they all were gone and it is an amazing little sub for HT and music. i was actually shocked by it when i set it up even after reading all the great thoughts on it.
it is a nice size too. i have mine placed near field and it does NOT disappoint. that being said it is a nice enough sized footprint that you can add a second x-sub down the line to round it out even more.
Thanks for the help guys. Looks like it just may be the X-Sub. Until it get's back in stock, I'll keep searching for alternatives, but as Adam said, I think it is my best bet. The X-Sub will live up to HT bass; I hope? Movies like Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers, King Kong, World Trade Center, etc?
Also remember my room is 23'x16' :)
Thanks!

I just hope your expectations are realistic. By all accounts, the X-sub is a formidable subwoofer, especially for its price, but it will not blow the roof off your 3000 cubic feet room, assuming your ceilings are 8 feet high. No subwoofer at that price range will do that for that room. However, it will definitely be a marked improvement over your current subwoofer.
Good luck.

yes it will IMHO. and as mentioned above it will not shatter your windows. my living room is about the size of your bedroom! oh the joys of housing prices in the Los Angeles area :)!
i have mine as mentioned- near field- by my front right speaker and it pumps it out nicely. the foot print of the x-sub will alow this. i was watching an advance copy of "casino royale" on sunday and it hit hard. felt the vibrations through the floor as i sat on the couch. this was nice. and no distortion. flags of our fathers was my test dvd once i set it up. and it confirmed it was able to handle some torture. i've had a few friends over who were amazed at what this little sub can pump out.
as mentioned due to it's size you can always add another to really fill out the low end down the line as funds become available- which is what i'll be doing in a couple weeks. you definitely don't NEED to do this. i just WANT to do this to see how running dual x-subs will be! i have a feeling it will be nice :).
not only that but the thing is impeccably built with REAL materials and looks really nice (i have the satin black). and av123 has unrivaled service. the day after i got my sub i got an email from the owner Mark who was in town on business and he actually wanted to come by my house so he could evaluate my x-sub. my work schedule wouldn't permit it but, i was humbled that he would want to visit me and check out my modest little system (elite receiver, mission speakers and the x-sub). you won't find that type of service and attention to the customer anywhere else.
good luck.
jerrodshook 02-27-07, 03:44 PM It's a very good sub. I bought it just to pacify me until I could afford a higher dollar (HSU VTF3) sub. For my dedicated HT (14x20) it does a very respectful job. It won't shake the house, but it's a solid performed. It does a very good job on the music I've listened too so far.
Thanks guys.
I'm definitely not looking for it to break any windows! Actually I DON'T want any rattling or house shaking. I just want to be sure it will outperform my current Zenith :).
Thank you all for your help!
P.S. - Adam - It's not my bedroom :). Its the basement. Haha!
BassTek 03-01-07, 10:33 PM It's a great little sub. I've had mine for almost a year now and I love it.
