View Full Version : Has anyone compared different Component Cables?
willmgordon 02-27-07, 10:18 AM Hey all, recently got tired of my flashing screen on my Westinghouse through HDMI, so I switched to an old PS2 component cable I had. Overall I am satisfied so far, but I have noticed what seems like some noise being introduced in high motion scenes. Its not a lot, but it wasn't there with HDMI. My question is, since my component cable is from way way way back, could the bandwidth in them be less than current cords? The main cable is pretty thick but when it splits off to the individual colors they cables are uber thin. Would it be worth my while trying the sony brand PS3 cables? Has anyone compared cables?
phlydude 02-27-07, 10:54 AM I haven't seen Sony branded PS3 Component cables. I had to settle on PS2 cables. I only use it for PS2 games (tv issue - JVC 97s have a HDMI problem on PS2 games) and have seen nothing to make me look for an alternative.
Sunkist 02-27-07, 11:05 AM I used my old PS2 component cables for quite a while and just recently switched to HDMI and say no real difference so I think they work fine, unless your cables are just bad which could happen.
tripp1n 02-27-07, 06:17 PM would like to know about this myself, ive been using my original cables that came with my slim ps2 and just today purchased hd component cables for it and was wandering if there really is such a quality difference, before i open it and cant return it.
yakkosmurf 02-27-07, 10:26 PM Wasn't there an article about the Westinghouse TVs needing an update to use their HDMI connections? That might fix your problem.
Or you could buy a better TV. :p

If you are going from the composite (yellow video cable) to component (red, blue, green video cables) then you should see a difference and you can turn on higher resolution modes in games that support it, and if your TV supports high res.
willmgordon 02-28-07, 09:29 PM Just thought I would update, the shakiness is very present on an all blue image when set to 1080P. I removed 1080P and went down to 1080i and it vanished. HDMI didnt have the shakiness, so I am going to go buy some new sony branded ones and see if they are cleaner.

i've used several devices and always found digital cables to be cleaner and slightly sharper than analog cables. for example, i've hooked up my upconverting LG DVD player to 2 different HDTV's i own, both with the same result, as well as my PS3 and computer monitor.
with that said, i did not notice a huge difference, just a noticeable one.
tripp1n 03-01-07, 12:04 AM thanks sunkist the ones i purchased were the hd component universal ones from ebgames for $15, im hoping these are good enough, since a couple people i talked to said they wont be since theyre universal and i need to buy a dedicated ps2 component hd cable instead ??
How would i change the resolution for my games though now ?
Sunkist 03-01-07, 09:43 AM Sony branded cables might be marginally better but it is hard to say. If games support progressive scan (like God of War) you can turn it on in the options menu, GT4 supports 1080i which is also in its options menu.
willmgordon 03-01-07, 01:27 PM Well I will prolly buy them this weekend, I will post if the SOny ones remove the image refresh shakiness at 1080P
Blitzzz 03-01-07, 02:44 PM i got a pair of $15 ones from ebgames for my ps2... the quality is noticeably worse on the ps3 than with hdmi... i get a faint double shadow on the image.
yakkosmurf 03-01-07, 03:33 PM ...GT4 supports 1080i which is also in its options menu. How does this one still surprise people? I've been enjoying this feature since the game came out. Definitely didn't look as good as GTHD does, but it a lot better looking than any of the other racing games out there.
crashairlines 03-02-07, 03:53 AM I'm planning on taking the plunge this weekend and will buy the PS3. I won't be able to use HDMI. If I use one of the cables that converts HDMI to component cables that includes the red and white audio cables in addition to the blue, green and red video cables, will the PS3 still output sound through the optical fiber if I use that for surround sound too?
I'd like to use the optical fiber for surround sound for BluRay movies through a receiver, but just use the plain stereo sound through the component cables to the TV for gaming so I don't have to bother with a reciever for when I play PS3 games. I would just turn down the volume on the TV from the component audio when watching BluRay movies and listen to the surround sound through optical fiber through my reciever if it let me. I wasn't sure if the PS3 would send sound through both connections if I had both component sound and optical sound connected. I wanted to check with someone in the know before I bought any cables. Thanks.
willmgordon 03-02-07, 01:15 PM Yes you can tell the PS3 which sound output to use when you go through vid/audio setup
I got one of those $15 universal PS2/Xbox/GC cables from EB. While anything in 1080i looks just fine, 480p suffers from a diag rolling shadow over the image. Doesn't matter what I'm doing. Playing a DVD, or Resistance (which gets downconverted to 480p for me). You don't notice it in games much but I can't watch DVD's on it. I would go replace the cables but I'm hoping to upgrade to an HDMI tv shortly.
Guess what I'm saying is, stay away from those cheap universal cables.

Thanks for the info
tripp1n 03-03-07, 07:51 PM LynFx, could quality issues it maybe be because you dont have an hdmi tv ?
No tripp1n. I get no issues with my standalone dvd player sending out 480p via component, or my HD DVR sending 1080i and 480p component. It is either the cables, or my PS3 doesn't send 480p correctly. I'm guessing it is the cables, or I should say I'm hoping it is the cables. :)
Ollie W. Holmes 03-04-07, 01:36 AM I'm using Monster cables labeled for the PS3, and the video is configured for 1080i. Yes, I overpaid for a cable but in a year, the connection will still be tight, thanks to Monster's superb plug construction. Can't say the same for cheaper cables, which have a tendency to develop oxides or a loose fit. I once bought a cheap component cable for the PS2 and one of the lines just went flaky, causing a tint shift. I had to rotate the rca connector to remake the connection.

I tried both the React ($25) and Sony ($20) component cables. The React has significantly more ghosting in one of the Blu-ray test patters (the last screen in the easter egg on Sony Blu-ray discs, type 7669 + enter on main menu). By turning up the backlight to the max on my LCD, I can clearly see a gray band about 5 pixels wide on both sides of vertical lines.
The Sony cable is much better, although it still has a very slight ghosting, a thin band on the right of the vertical lines.
And Best Buy is charging more for the React. Go figure.
hope this helps

tripp1n 03-05-07, 02:34 PM well after these reviews of the universal ps2 component cables from ebgames, i think im going to return them since the 7 day open package grace period is over.
Unless anyone else thinks theyre worth the $15 over the stock ps2 composite cable?

Component will be better than composite but if you get the sony component then they should be the best, and they're cheaper.
tripp1n 03-05-07, 09:34 PM where can i get the sony component cable for cheaper in store, i can only find it at CC and its $25.
