I have had a Samsung HD850 for about a year now. I originally bought it for it's ability to upconvert over component, but since purchased a HDMI switching receiver. Sunday night I watched a movie that was so bad I just turned off the tv before it was over (never stopped the movie). I don't really think that is relevant but what the heck it is what happened. Regardless I went to pop in a new movie last night and and got:
The disc cannot play
Please check the disc
I tried a couple of other discs as well as a cleaning disc and got the same message. I unplugged the unit for a couple of minutes - rinse and repeat - same problem. Just to be sure I left it unplugged overnight and tried again this morning with no difference.
I don't have a receipt and the date on the back of the unit is Nov 2005; so I am pretty much SOL for a warranty repair. I am assuming the unit is toast and repairing without a warranty doesn't seem to be a very economical move. So unless there is a magical fix for this I think I need to be buying a new dvd player. Since I have HDMI switching I would prefer something that uses that interface. I have no particular loyalties so whatever is the best bang for the buck is my pick. This is the 6th dvd player I have gone through in the past couple of years. Along with receiver and tv repairs. I have concluded that the wiring in my house is the culprit and have the nice stuff on a line conditioning ups unit. I thought this would fix the dying dvd problems, but it seems to have only slowed it down. Any suggestions on a decent DVD player (w/HDMI) that I won't mind replacing in a year or two?
