Got the PS3 last night, setup with the digital optical to my Yamaha reciever. I played a game or a standard def dvd, the dolby digital ex was connecting as it should, yet when the Blue-ray disk "the descent"was put in it wouldn't connect. I had to opt for just the enhanced or cinema or whatever. I went over the settings in both the console and the DVD itself repeatedly. All thoughts and insights very appreciated, thanks.
Set your optical out as Bitstream in the settings rather than PCM. There is a sticky in the Blu-ray Players section on these boards about the use of the PS3 as a Blu-ray player and what it's limitations are.

Thanks for the quick feedback Bushi. I saw that option but had no idea what it meant. It said something like "if choosing bitstream you could miss some of the movies' audio. Is that just bunk, and is there a sound difference at all? keep it at bitstream then for the other formats as well I'm assuming? And sorry if this was in the manual, thought I covered everything important.
I don't believe it's in the manual. Two things you will be missing out on using Bitstream and Optical out are DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD audio formats.
I would recommend saving up and getting a competent HDMI receiver so that you can enjoy everything that your PS3 can offer you.

Thanks for the inspiration, bushi. So am I stuck with DD 5.1? What about a DTS software update with the PS3? Will that not aplly to my lowly optical out?
