No I don't mean they disappeared.
I mean, about 6 months ~1 year ago the Mackie 824 active monitors swept across all the forums.
What has happened to their popularity?
Their frequency response was incredibly flat. All you needed was a preamp since they are powered. And better yet no runs of speaker wire to degrade the sound quality.
The reviews were all good. Better yet they were ~$1200 a pair.

I have made many a referral to use Mackie HR824's in the past several weeks. One thing I've noticed is that many don't know anything about them. And that's a shame because they are one of the best speakers out there for a 2 channel music system or even for HT.

My friend has them on his desk in his music studio and they sound amazing. They are super-quick and detailed, and the bass has surprising punch and extension for such small speakers. I was looking at buying some 824s (or 624s), but was slightly concerned that they are nearfield-monitors (tweeter dispersion), and might not sound as good in a large room with distance between them and the listening position. Anyone in the know(tm) want to comment?

I know several people who use the Mackie's in their HT rooms. Here is one of them. PM him and ask his opinion.
Look at his room on page 23.

Yep, just because they're labeled as nearfield doesn't mean they can't be used in mid or far field.
