View Full Version : I just bought my 1st Dolby True HD Blu-ray for $16.99!
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/2068/ninby4.jpg
I just came back from Best Buy where they have Nine Inch Nails: Beside You in Time (blu-ray) for $16.99 (on sale, and cheaper than Amazon). Don't know if it will last the whole week, but its good today.
This is my 1st Dolby True HD title (for use on my PS3). I love NIN...but gimme True HD (or any lossless audio track) and I'm rockin'!!!!!!!!!!
SetterP 02-27-07, 03:58 PM Cool, thanks for the heads up.
Headed to Best Buy now to scoop up a copy myself.
Interested to hear my first TrueHD track too.
By the way, the disc also has a Dolby True HD audio setup feature, as well as a video display setup feature. Very cool bonuses I wasn't expecting.
Using the video setup, I noticed my black levels were a little crushed, so I raised my brightness level on my TV from 30 to 40. Now everything looks great.
Haven't yet tried the Dolby True HD setup feature, but I will later tonight.
Best Buy: 16.99 * 1.05 (sales tax) = $17.84
Amazon: 17.45 - 1.75 (HDDISC10) = $15.70
Hmm... yeah, I think I did okay. ;)
btstarke 02-27-07, 04:33 PM And for paying $1 more he can watch it today, and not have to wait. Hmmm... I think he did ok too!

But if you have Amazon Prime, you will have it today. With free 2-day shipping, nearly all of my movies have shipped from Amazon's warehouse in Nevada on Monday and showed up my house in California on Tuesday.

I've got Amazon Prime but mine isn't scheduled for delivery till tomorrow. One day won't kill me and saving a little is always nice.
Looking forward to this disc though. I saw NIN twice on their Downward Spiral tour. Once with Pop Will Eat Itself and the Jim Rose Circus and the other time with Hole and Marilyn Manson. Absolutely love the With Teeth CD so this concert should be a real treat.

A little more info on the PQ setup???? Im not a fan of NIN but if it has some kind of calibration program, I'll take it!! I might have to head up to BB and take advantage of the buy 2 get $20.00 off deal. Also interesting is this title is only available for HD DVD at their online store.
I'm holding in my hands right now.
You got skills man, I mean to be able to hold the BD and type at the same time. :D
PATTON67 02-27-07, 05:27 PM Quick question...

bm
SetterP 02-27-07, 05:34 PM Just got back from BB, they didn't have any of this week's BD releases besides Stranger than Fiction.

Are you using an HDMI 1.3 receiver?
Are you using an HDMI 1.3 receiver?
No, I'm using an Onkyo 674 receiver (HDMI 1.1).
I selected Dolby True HD audio track, and my PS3 worked perfectly.
I checked the info, and my PS3 showed Dolby True HD was indeed playing. It sounded amazing. I can check the audio bit rate later tonight, for those interested.

Umm....you need an HDMI 1.3 receiver to decode the TrueHD track.

Not if his PS3 is doing the decoding.

briankmonkey 02-27-07, 07:19 PM Best Buy and Fry's don't have it in the silicon valley.. Darn, looks like tomorrow it should be here.

Is The Downward Spiral super audio cd pretty good? I had the original CD but lost it a long time ago.
DaGamePimp 02-27-07, 07:57 PM No dice here on either BD or HD at the local BB , they only got in the regular DVD . Too bad since the sale price is probably only good for today .

The price should be good through Saturday at least since it was in Sunday's newspaper ads.
Tes7769 02-27-07, 08:05 PM Everywhere i've seen the NiN BDR/HD DVD discs advertised for sale, they've been completely sold out.
can somebody pleas check BACK COVER ?
is there region mark ?
or is it region ALL, or region free ?
thanx
Marek
There is no region mark on the back.
I got lucky, I called my local Best Buy and asked about it, they told me they had one copy left in stock. I almost hung up but then I asked if they could hold it for me and they said they would. Rock on indeed.

5-Stars for Picture
Shot entirely with high-def cameras, simply put, this is the best-looking concert video I've ever seen.
5-Stars for Audio
Equally as terrific is the disc's Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround track (optional Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 stereo mixes are also provided). For once, the Blu-ray doesn't get blocked by the bouncer outside the TrueHD party. Though Blu-ray hardware currently lags a bit in terms of across-the-board decoding support for the audio format, my PlayStation 3 supports TrueHD, and it really rocked this one out.

I don't know that this review is accurate. Peter says "Both of the next-gen releases receive identical 1.78:1 widescreen 1080p/VC-1-encoded transfers." But that's not correct, is it?

I can't speak for HD DVD, but as far as my Blu-ray edition, yes, that is correct.
VC-1 encoded, with a 1.78:1 widescreen presentation.

I think he meant the 1080p part.

Is The Downward Spiral super audio cd pretty good? I had the original CD but lost it a long time ago. I don't know about the dual-SACD version but my DualDisc version sounds great. However, I've no reference to how the CD sounds like. The DualDisc sounded fantastic though.
There are advantages of either version. The SACD has a second disc with remixes but only in stereo - in both Red Book and SACD stereo. The CD layer version of the album is also the complete one, unlike the DualDisc CD side.
The DualDisc version has video extras in it including Closer. It is also cheaper than the SACD.

Jarod M 02-27-07, 11:55 PM I should have been more specific. The BD and HD DVD releases received separate, format specific encodings. The release FAQ specifically says so. But Peter writes the review as if the encodings were the same, like the Warner releases. It is possible that they look the same, but he implies more than that.

Thanks WrieSimple. Honestly I don't care about surround sound at this point for music so I'd be happy with the stereo mix if it was superior. I guess I'll have to read up some more. Cheapest seems to be $24 online!

The cheapest price for SACD according to Froogle is US$24 from a reputable dealer. The rest are eBay stuff for US$6 less.
If you have an account at Yourmusic.com, you can get the DualDisc version for US$6.99 inclusive of shipping. Using that account, you can also get a bunch of other SACDs for the same price or US$12.99 if it's two-disc set. I got a bunch of Elton John's SACDs for US$6.99.

great, thanks for the info. I'll have to check that site out.
Got lucky and got the NIN blu-ray disc today. Awesome :)
Ragnarok 03-02-07, 11:02 AM So if the PS3 does the TrueHD/DTS-HD decoding itself, can it send the bitstream to the receiver via optical?

I selected the Dolby TrueHD track and sent it to my receiver through optical. The specs showed that the PS3 was outputting the TrueHD track as Dolby Digital @ 640 kbps. It still sounds stunning, though I look forward to getting an HDMI receiver so I can take full advantage of it.

So the track is getting down rezed to DD5.1 when being transmitted via optical.

Actually, this is not what is happening. Let me explain:
The Dolby TrueHD track on the BD NIN disc has an embedded Dolby Digital 5.1 track. When you select the TrueHD from the menu, you will get True HD down the HDMI port, but Dolby Digital 5.1 down the optical port.
The OSD for the PS3 will always say Dolby TrueHD, but which track you are ultimately listening to is determined by which digital output you use.

Thank you for your continued participation on this site. You and your co-workers (and Trent, of course) did a hell of a job on this release and you should all be commended. The disc (I have the HD DVD version, since my Panasonic BD player doesn't decode DTHD yet) is great - I've watched it twice already and it gets better every time. Unmatched video and audio quality - well done!
